Is the Honda fluid really different than other major brands? I know with the trannie issues, it is best to go by the book, but doesn't it say something like 120k miles for the first change?

Transmission fluid has sort of a built-in guage for when it needs to be changed.

The colors wil go from (new to old) red-pink-clear-tan-light brown-brown-black.

If your car's fluid is at the light-brown stage at only 8k miles then I can only think it's done a lot of heavy accelerating from a dead stop or some of the clutches are slipping, etc....As fsttyms1 asked, does it smell burnt?

yea i wouldnt use any thing other than honda fluid (accept either redline or amsoil has been recently certified for use in hondas. they would be the only one) and you are supposed to do it like every 50k
