Checking Tranny Fluid

Hi,

When I start my car and throw it into reverse, it's no longer a smooth transition. In fact, it's very very hard (as if I did a neutral drop). I checked my tranny fluid and it was very low (below the first dot). My friend says that - unlike checking your oil - you're supposed to check your tranny fluid with the car running. Is this true or should I add some fluid to it?

Thanks
Roshan

In Hondas, the automatic transmission fluid level must be checked with the engine OFF immediately after driving for 10-15 miles, or until the fluid is at normal operating temperature.

My first tranny had a harsh reverse engagement that started about a month or so before it went down for the count.

Check it with the tranny, and engine hot just after a good drive, as soon as you turn the engine off. Unlike with engine oil where you'd check it cold, or after giving it awhile to allow all the oil to drain back into the pan.
