Check Your Comptech Springs

I recently went for a routine inspection and was told my springs are cracked on 3 out of 4 springs.. The only info I've really found out is that supposedly the Silver springs have non-conforming issues and the black ones they claim should be ok. Please check your springs and bring it to the CL site where this discussion has already started along with a poll..

Please chime in so we can see how many others are having issues...

Here's a picture of what the shop took out so the springs didn't ruin my tires:

Here's a picture of what I took:

Mine have the typical rust like the others posted on the CL board. Not too happy.

Mine are rusted, I can barely tell that they were originally silver.

I'm in Toronto.

I'd read the whole thread on A-CL to get more details but you can always just contact Comptech @ 916-933-1080 they are aware of the problem..

What is the recourse if :

1. in warranty with receipt?
2. out of warranty with receipt?
3. out of warranty no receipt?

My springs are out of warranty for some time.. I received the springs at $100 off their retail.. Which makes it $200.. But I am the first cause.. More people on the CL are following up on this..

Talk to comptech they will more then likely ask for pictures so they don't have to physically see the springs and go from there..

I wrote an e-mail to the Acura dealership who installed the CT springs (Woodbine Acura, Toronto, ON). I am expecting an answer. Purchased and installed June 2003. Should be within warranty. Front springs still bright silver. Rear 2 springs show pitting at the bottom of the springs.

BTW, it is normal for the Comptech logo to be upside-down on the rear springs? I'll try and get pics.

$100 off retail is nothing special, but I guess you WERE out of warranty. But to be honest, if I'm going to replace my springs and pay labour, I'd rather just put in H&R 50103 for $185.

The next question is, other than visual inspection, how can one tell if springs are about to collapse? I'm sure that would damage shocks and a few other things right? (not to mention, be very dangerous on the road)

P.S. thinking about this even more, if Comptech really has faith in their "new powdercoating" process, they should offer a 10 year warranty on replacements.

Yes, I was out of warranty and I was the first case.. Comptech is aware of the problem and they are aware of these boards since it's a huge chunk of their customer base..

There was one person that had a professional look at his springs and he tapped lightly with a hammer to see if there were any changes in the tone.. And on some spots the tone defintley changed which shows signs of internal fractures or poor choice in material..

I installed the black comptechs over 3 years ago and they look fine, powder coat is still shiny... but I also live in California. I'll try the hammer test to see if there is any unseen flaws when I get home today.

So what's the verdict on the safety of continuing to ride on rusted springs? Are they safe?

What periodic checks can we do to ensure that they continue to be safe? How often?

If they are not safe then this should be a RECALL. Nothing short of that would be credible.

YES, I had the same problem and Comptech sent me a new set for free (even though i was out of warranty) and then i sent them the bill for the instllation and alignment which they re-embursed me for. It didn't go as easily as i explained here, but none the less i got a new set. I am VERY dissappointed in the quality issues here, not to mention how dangerous it is.

Here are some pics of mine when i had them replaced...

For some reason the fronts were ok, it was just the rears that rusted/cracked.

The process took about 2 weeks. The guy i initially started talking to was no longer employed there. I don't remember the other guys name. It wouldn't have taken so long if they didn't send a pickup for the old ones FIRST. What did they expect me to take the springs off my car, send them back, wait for them to inspect them, then send me new ones? I guess i could have walked to work

Damn, those are some ugly springs.... wtf is up with comptech??? I hope they give all that are affected new replacements..... so, i gues spraying them down with WD40 or Silicon lubricant spray is not going to help the longevity of the spring????

I think I will stick to the H&R Sport springs....

Damn sorry to see that ArN 2000 TL those look almost as bad as mine.. And my rears were horrible but the fronts were some what ok...

I can't believe they fully re-imbursed you for all that sh!t.. I guess it sucks to be the first person.. Atleast everyone else is getting taken care of and my loses aren't unnoticed.. But still that really fvckin pisses me off..!!

I can't believe yours are snapped even with powdercoating still on them.. That's insane.. Seems like internal fractures.. Or really poor material used..

If you can please post your pics and everything on the CL forum also...

I specifically asked him how do I know I won't go through this BS again and Joes' reply was you receieved black ones right? I said yes and he said there were issues with the silver ones and as long as they were the black ones I'd be good.. So I'd ask them what's up..

i dont know what others are getting but i am getting teins ss with the edfc unit. once a company screws up to this extent then they just lost all my loyalty i gave them. i havent heard 1 thing about teins and so far no one has said anything about them rusting or any other problems. i mean this is rediculous even my 1989 chevy vans springs arnt rusted, freaking it hasnt even been a year and a half and to the extent of what the springs look like is just inexcuseable. especially for a company know for its quality.

If that is their stance, I would suggest anyone thinking about lowering springs should look at H&R or Tein instead of Comptech.

I took a look at my OEM spring that I pulled off after two years and there is no rust at all.
Comptech has a problem with some of these springs, as there should be no rust.

For what it's worth, I just called Comptech to see if they are still shipping the silver coated springs. They said NO, they are only shipping out the new black powder coat. He said for instance if you go to an Acura Dealership, and they have to order them, you'll get black. If they still have the silver ones, you can have the dealership specifically request to order the new black ones. The did acknowledge that there was an issue with some of the springs, but there should be no concerns with getting the black ones.
