check engine light
quick question...i just noticed this happening over the weekend.
when i start the car, the "maintenance req'd" light comes on, and stays on until i hit the gas, then it immediately goes off.
i've never noticed this before, any idea what caused it? i'm thinking its nothing major if it goes off as soon as i touch the gas.

Does it come on solid or blink? And is that a check engine light or a maintenance required light??? If it's an engine light I'd say it could be fuel octane level. Our cars have knock sensors, if you run too low of a fuel grade depending on your altitude it could be too low of a grade and cause your check engine light to come on. I've been told repeadly by techs and in-the-knows that you can run 89 at almost all altitudes and engine loads on the TL-P's and even 87 if you're at a very low altitude withouth high engine loads.

thanks vtec...it comes on solid at first, then blinks once i take it out of park. as soon as the car moves forward it goes off. weird though, it stays on if the car is in reverse.
i dont think its the octane level, i always use premium

agean...
How many miles on your car since you had it serviced?
If it's the MAINTENANCE REQUIRED light... it is programmed to come on for different durations at different mileages... to tell you that it's time to take it into the dealer for a ripoff service charge. It's all in the manual as to when the MAINTENANCE light is supposed to come on. It also tells you how to RESET IT if someone else does the service.
You can reset it yourself by doing the following:
1. Insert the key, but leave it in the OFF position.
2. PRESS AND HOLD "BOTH" the odomoter "select" and "reset" buttons down together.
3. Now turn the key to ON without actually starting the engine... CONTINUE to hold the two odometer buttons down for about ten seconds until the Maintenance reset light goes out. You should now be reset for another 7,500 miles or so.
Read the manual to be sure that I've described things correctly... but I believe I'm correct.
If it's the CHECK ENGINE light... then that is another matter that may be a bit more difficult to remedy.
Hope this helped...

southbound, i think you're right. it's the maintenance req'd light, probably thinking that i'm due for an oil change. i'm just over 6,000 miles, and i recently changed the oil on my own.
so obvious i never thought of it.
THANKS GUYS!

It will blink longer and longer each time you start your car. Once you hit 7500 then it will remain solid the whole time. That is just a reminder to get the 7500 mile service. If you don't go in for your service there is a way to clear the solid light in your manual.

agean,
Glad I could help... Actually you can clear the MAINTENANCE REQUIRED light BEFORE it ever starts coming on. I do my own oil changes and went through the reset routine as outlined in the manual when I changed my oil at approximately 3,500 miles, and again at 7,000 miles, and again at 12,000 miles (even though I didn't need to yet) That apparantely resets the mileage counter to zero every time you do it. Because, I've never had my MAINTENANCE light come AT ALL and I now have 13,000 miles on the car. It's almost as easy as reseting your two odometers like when you fill up your tank with gas. So now, I just reset it every few thousand miles... whenever I think of it.
No more light in the face...
P.S. AGEAN IS A GREAT COLOR CHOICE... mine's a year old, and I STILL look back at it every time I walk away from it
