Cheap Headers?

i have a question as i am not too car savvy just yet...
with all these cheaper alternatives to Comptech headers that are out now, and especially these even cheaper Megan headers that i had just been aware of.
can they have a Negative effect on the car?? besides bad welds and leaking, can the headers cause permanent damage to my engine or anything?
any insight is appreciated. thanks!

no, not at all...the headers are not mechanical at all. As long as you can hook in your O2 sensor (all of them allow this), your engine will run normally, just be able to breathe out exhaust much better.

like I said, it wont do anything to your engine if you headers leak. All it will do in get on your nerves because you will hear the "tick" noise from the exhaust gas when you accelerate.

If headers leak, you will lose torque and thats about it. Theres a megan groupbuy going on on another forum. Its a great deal. I have these megans headers and they are great. Perfect fit and looksnice.

any header will fit the '99-'03 TLP or Type S. Only the CLS 6 speed is different.

megan headers groupbuy

i went ahead and ordered the megan headers too through the group buy.

seems like the price is really good. i would have considered the alpha works headers, but their price is now over 2 times what it was just earlier this year.

hope that the megan headers dont give me any problems cause $175 is still, well.... $175.00. Im told that install is going to be $120.00, but now im hoping to get it done for around $80.00

peace

yeah im considering buying those headers, but since my dad bought me the car and told me not to put headers on, im scared of what can happen with these in particular since noone has stood up for their quality and longevity..

What's the old saying....Oh yeah, you get what you pay for....Oh and another...penny wise and pound foolish...

The reason the Comptechs are so expensive are:

1 - Design - Comptech spent all the money to come up with the design and everyone else copied it (good for everyone else)
2 - Quality - the "other" guys use cheap labor to MIG, rather than TIG weld the headers. Poor quality welds are a typically result.

Consider the costs:

1 - Initial purchase
2 - Initial install (ok so maybe you're gonna install them yourself...isn't that worth anything?)

Ok, so now say you find a leak. Whatcha gonna do? OBX and the others won't warrant them, so you're fvcked. Gotta pay to get a new set, pay to have the old removed/new installed + your time and headaches.

I realize the Comptechs are a mint, but why deal with all the potential problems?

$175 SHIPPED THATS WHY! If they turn out to be crap, I'll yank em and get the stock ones put back on.

because that little time it takes me to put them on and off is not worth 1200 like comptechs are. I would have to go through 6 pairs of megan ss headers to eqaul one comptech header. Am I really going to go through 6 pairs, very unlikely, I doubt i will keep my car longer then a year and half from now, and most probablys are usually after 6 months to a year. Unless your gonna keep ur car until it dies then comptech might be worth it, but who on this board will do that? very small amount.

all i gotta say is 1200 is more then ridiclous for headers.

Actually you are right...half way. The only headers that are certified smog legal are the Comptechs. You will pass the emissions test with any of the headers according to the computer, but some states (California) may not pass you visually because the Smog certification is not on the header itself, physically.

If you want to do this once, get the Comptechs. If you accept the possiblity of replacing them once, twice or more, the get one of the cheaper makes.

that isnt ture either. There are plenty of people that have had OBX for well over 1 year. My Stone headers are nearly that old and I havent had 1 problem at all. The whole point it you can spend 1/6th the Comptech price.

You can also go the middle of the road and go with the Alpha Werks. Their quality and fitment has been established already. They have a 1-year warranty and they are right smack dab in the middle in terms of price.

Yes it is true. I said possibility. You cannot deny that OBX, Stone and others makes have had more problems with fit, durability, and manufactuer support than Comptech. I've had my CT's for three years come February. Now, I plan on keeping this car a long time (7-8 years more) so it was worth it to me. Also, I'm in California so CT's CARB exemption was critical. If you are keeping it a couple years, I'd agree that OBX and the others are a good move.
