charcoal cabin air filters?

Is there a real benefit to buying charcoal filters as opposed to a standard filter?

I havent seen them for our cars...? I guess you could just cut one and put it inline with the regular ones. But I wouldnt think it would help much unless you smoke alot in your car or fart alot.

Active carbon should be better at absorbing smell in addition to filtering out dusts. Regular filter does not get rid of those exhaust fume smell if you are stuck behind a truck in traffic. I bought the Borsch charcoal filter from www.rockauto.com since I will have a little one coming in July.

Is the charcoal a specific type of charcoal? Can you use other types of charcoal (not the type you use for BBQ)...but medical or the type you use in fish tanks?

Not sure the same type since I am not active carbon expert.
But I have been using active carbon water shower head bought at Home Depot and they are great at getting rid of chlorine from the water. (If you have not noticed the wap water has more chlorine after 911.) This positive experience prompts me to buy Bosch's cabin filter, which is listed on Rockauto as active carbon.
BTW it came with two filters so you only need to buy one, still more expensive than two plain filters but charcoal is supposed to be a premium product.
