The ECU contains a chip called the Immobilizer. This chip is programmed to recognize certain signals and ignore all others. The signals correspond to the RFID code "transmittted" by the transponder in your key. For our purposes, you can say the "signal" corresponds to the "key code". If the Immobilizer receives a key code it doesn't recognize, it cuts power to the fuel pump and the car won't start (the starter will just keep spinning it).

If you get a new ECU, that ECU will have had the key codes stored for the previous owner. You must transfer your old ECU's recognized Immobilizer key codes to the new ECU. The accepted way is for the dealer to do it where they download the codes from the old ECU, install the new ECU, and upload the codes to that ECU.

You asked will you have to bypass security for the car to turn on. So, if you get the Immobilizer reprogrammed to recognize your keys' codes, no, you won't have to bypass it. If you don't get the Immobilizer reprogrammed, you will have to bypass it...which may be something as simple as removing the Immobilizer chip. Another alternative may be to transfer the Immobilizer chip from your old ECU to your new one.

What is a ECU chip and what does it do? My Acura dealer is saying I need a new ECU chip to replace my a new (re manufactered) tranny. Is this true? Why would that be the case? Can I replace the tranny without a new ECU chip? Please help.
