Car and Driver 10 Best Performer List

I just got my January 2002 edition of Car and Driver, and on page 42, it states that the Acura 3.2TL Type-S has the lowest interior sound level at 70 MPH - only 62 dBA. Wow! I didn't think it was that quiet. Do you guys think that was a misprint, an error in the DB reading, or does that number sound accurate? For those of you that are familar with decibel ratings, that's incredibly low. If it's true, then Kick-Ass for the TL!

Hm... 62dBA!!?? That's weird... my S-Class is rated at 62dBA at highway speed as well, but my TLS is significantly louder.....

I also thought that the Type-S was pretty loud inside. Something seems a little shady...

I know in Consumer Reports the GS300 used to be the best (2001 & 2001) so could the TLs be as quiet as the GS's ?

i wonder what kind of road did they ride the car on. if it's a really smooth road, then the tls will perform very well and it will be hard to really distinguish between cars.

but go to a noisy road, our tls is loud....

I saw this blurb in my Jan 02 C and D too. I'm not sure I believe it. But I CAN compare my new TL to the Dodge Intrepid I was driving, and it's much quieter. The worst I hear is some wind noise from the A-pillars.

Well, at least we made it on the list for something--I have a sound meter, and will try testing it when I get the chance. 62 dbA is pretty quiet. I would rather have had the 4 second 0-60 time as bragging rights, though!

well.. I can definitely say that if you find the right road, the TL can be REALLY quiet. Usually, u get typical roads that have the top layer of tar worn off and you have that gritty road surface. However, the other day, I went on a FRESHLY paved road and oh my GOSH, the car really shone on its 'luxury' part. If only all roads were that nice. It was practically gliding along and u can sense the slight aberrations and man .. its so quiet, all you hear is the sound of the old cars with their squeaky belts or busted mufflers NEXT to you.

I think they are right. The TL/CL's are the most quiet new car from that list. Of course after 1000 miles, the seat/sunroof/console/rear window/glove box squeaks bring the decible reading to just under 100!!! (oh yeah, the subwoofer squeak too!!!) Maybe they should test a "pre-owned" one.
