Can you "unprogram" a lost key/fob so it wouldn't work?

Can you have key/fobs reprogrammed so old key chip won't work?

I posted this in 2 threads and haven't gotten much info yet. I guess I can call dealer and ask about this but it's a concern I have and you all seem knowledgeable about the Acura TL. Thought a new thread might get more response...When I bought the car it only came with one key set (seller said the other is lost). I heard about scams that after you buy a car, they know your address and come and drive the car away (easy steal). Is there a way I can have dealer program the key I got with the car and also get a new one so the one that is "lost" won't work? I'd feel safer then.

You mean reprogramming the car so the existing keys don't work? I have no idea... Yeah you should probably just call the dealer and ask.

The computer can only remember 2 master keys and a valet key. When you program a new key, the first key that was programmed is automatically deleted and will not work with the car again.

I don't think we have a master key. I just have a key and fob. Bought this used w/out even a manual. Yea, I probably should call dealer. I'll post what they tell me. It might be of use to other used car buyers.

What I meant by a "master key" was the key with the fob, not the valet key.

You get two keys each with a remote, and a valet key. When you program a third key, the first key that was programmed is gone, so you don't have to worry about the missing key falling into the wrong hands, because it's not going to work anymore.

Oops, I meant to say that it can hold up to 3, and if a fourth is programmed, the first will be erased.

Are you sure? I know you can only program 3 key fobs (remotes) to work with the car. I'm not sure how old key codes would "drop off" the list as you program more keys. I may be wrong but you don't reprogram the car when you get new keys but you do program the keys so how would the car know which keys to use or not?

In your scenario, if I get a new key made to replace a lost one and the lost one isn't the last code on the list, then one of my current keys wouldn't work because it was dropped from the list??? How does the car know which key was lost???

If key no.2 was lost, and you replaced it with a new (fourth) one, then you would lose key no.1's functions. So you would reprogram the no.1 key, which would then become no.3.

I got it. Thanks Pure A. To truly feel secure abou this, I need to purchase 2 more key fobs and have 3 programmed in total. That will zap the first one (lost one). Thanks!!!
