Can you clarify what gate shifting is?

Is gate shifting when you start in 1st gear, and you have the shifter knob all the way to the bottom of the gearbox, then once you need to shift to 2nd, you push the knob to the right (5 speed tranny), then up to third and so on...???

is this what ppl are referring to when they say "gate shifting"

quick question though, how does this improve the acceleration of your car??? A lot of ppl on this forum gate shift when racing off the line, and claim it's better then simply leaving it in Auto mode, or using SS mode??? is this true? Do you really see that much of an improvement?

people say that the shifts are much quicker when gate shifting opposed to the delayed shifting in ss mode.

i always thought that this was extremely bad for trannies, but people seem like they do it fairly often. personally, i would rather lose the race than drop my tranny
