Can the Type S be driven on mid grade gas?

My daughter just bought a 2002 with 50K miles on it. I know some cars incorporate a computer in the engine that detunes to compensate for lower octane fuel. In the interest of saving a dime per gallon and sacrificing some performance in a typical commuting bumper to bumper drive, can she safely do this?
Thanks.

Yes.. some people regularly use lowest grade gas in their TL/TL-S.. It could lead to lower milage per tank as well as premature carbon build-up. I wouldn't suggest it. Welcome to the luxury car world... and Welcome to the forum!

There ya go, second post on that page. My mini-research as I traveled westbound.

And those were all technically premium, too. I can't imagine running 87 octane.

Mid grade around here is 89. It goes 87 - 89 - 93 in most stations. In my first gen, 91 octane rec., I go back and forth between 89 and 93, usually ending up with a mix that is closer to 91 then either of those are themselves, with no ill-results.
