Can I run 89 octane in my Type-S?
just kidding

I just picked mine up...mistakenly put 89 in the first tank...but after reading that thread, I will move to premium.

my dad has an 03 S bought in late '02, and he said the dealer told him the engine can compensate for the use of 87oct. were they bullshitting him? maybe, but he's ran regular 87 and it has never knocked or done anything weird. granted, there are still only 50 000 kilometers on the car. yes, 50k, so maybe it hasn't had enough long term driving to have an affect, also my dad drives pretty tame and rarely ever pushes it other than when some ricers were pushing him on the highway in the left lane even if he's going 120km/h...

the engine is designed to run on 94--the highest street gas available
the ecu will allow it to run on 91,,thats why it says MINIMUM 91
sure you can get away with 87 for a while and not HEAR the bad things going on
but you pay for it in reduced mpg/kpL and extra carbon loading
running a good fuel cleaner at max dose- twice- will clean up most systems
Driving the TL gently insn't always in its best interest either

i agree. especially now for my car, being the 3rd owner i wouldn't want to 'confuse' the car by suddenly not using 91. my buddy who i picked it off of tanked on V-Power, and i continue the trend.
#6
its not so much confusing the car-- as it is incomplete combustion and lowered mpg/kpl due to lowered octane
Do run a good fuel cleaner - at its max dose,,even if you currently use a tier 1 fuel,
there is plenty of carbon and byproduct buildup
Ethanol is not helping the situation~
I use Chevron/Texaco or Shell,,91 as thats highest avail here, and seafoam
If you can get 94 use it

As gas prices increase, MPG becomes more and more important. This may be intuitive, but think about it further.
People often think along the lines, "Gas is too expensive, I should try 87." However, as gas prices increase, the difference between 87 price and 91 price stays the same (~20cents).
Thus, as gas prices increase, it is actually cheaper to use 91 over 87. Any potential MPG gains of using 91 become much more significant in terms of Miles per Dollar.

only petro canada here has 94. i'm not driving a stage 1 STI, i'm pretty sure 91 is more than fine and 94 is redundant in a TL. 94 is hardly even accessible, companies don't make cars for the masses that can't be filled up where the masses fill up. 91 is most realistic. maybe i'll try 94 for the PC points, but aside from that, buzz off lol.

zero- do you run a fuel cleaner?
Those who run 87 are loading up the combustion chamber with byproduct crud
you dont notice the differance but its there in shorter cat life, plugs,
the TL is actually designed to run on 94, and the ecu can compensate settings of timing and fuel ratio to operate well on 91 - as found in most parts of the country
type S with its higher compression really needs 94 but will deal with 91
If 91 is whats avail, thats what you run
If 94 is at every station- as in some parts of the States- thats for you
Note in the door of filler cap says 91 MINIMUM for a reason
its not to make you spend an extra 50 bucks a year on better gas
Do it right and run Teir 1 brands, they have `up to double the Minimum amount of built in cleaners req. in the usa`
Its best to do a seafoam or bg or similar treatment to clear crud, then stick with good gas to cut down on problem
will still need annual seafoam for like new sparkle, but mpg even slightly better is going to make up the price differance over budget places or grade

And as a Plus your Completely Stock Right?
I have I/H and some goodies on the Engine and while Running 91 and being very gentle on the Gas I can get those numbers.
But with 87? Nah just Impossible for me and Also my Car runs like shit with it....

My TL-S Manual calls for 92....
I think what 01tl4tl wanted to said is that our cars can Run 94 as Stock and the ECU is able to handle that as a Normal Fuel.
Some Cars and I said SOME cannot run 94 In normal Basis its like Using Race Gas for them....

My brother ran 87 for YEARS with no issues.
However, after I got it, and cleaned it out, tuned it up, and started running premium,
he was visibly surprised at the difference in response and handling.
And, as stated, the mileage is superior.
I just ran 350 miles, 60mph, cruise, no stops, all highway,
and bet the mpg was in the 30s. Maybe 33 or 34.

so your brother ran 87 for years without Knowing it was crap
now you cleaned it out and run 91,, with a differance even he can tell
How is that running 87 with no issues?
re: tlp vs tls,,S has 11.5-1 compression compared to 9-1 on the P
higher compression really needs the higher octane
Note: Octane is a calculation- additives are put in fuel to delay its detonation
ie: prevent detonation/ignition before the piston reaches TDC
How much resistance to combustion is what the number indicates
Airplanes run 100-110 octane,,so do many race cars,,= high compression engines
92 octane is something I have never seen,,anyone have that in their area?
What does it say on the sticker inside your fuel door? 91 92?? and it says MINIMUM
to clarify: the engineers made the system to perform its best on 94
it can easily deal with 91 as thats what in most places
it will cope with 87, but with lowerd mpg etc as proven by many
there are many parts of the usa where 94 is the premium,,no 91 on the pump
now you cleaned it out and run 91,, with a differance even he can tell

Nope in here is 91 octane Premium ONLY... Ive ran 94 when is Available in Another City or Town but I didnt saw a Significant boost in MPGs to make it Cost-Effective....
BUT Ive ran 87 in a couple of Occasions on the TL-S and the Difference can be felt in Response/Power and Engine Vibration.

Just stating the mileage that I get. That recent trip was to sc and back from va all in one day. 490 miles each way 430 miles before the gas light came on each time.
01tl4tl --- every so often i use the techron fuel injector cleaner... maybe once a year usually if its on sale i buy it.
Skirmich---- the only mod i have on this tl is the p2r spacer and didnt notice any different in mpg with or without it.
plugs i use are NGK V-Power Spark Plugs ZFR6F-11

The small city I live in only has 5 gas stations. None of them sell 91 or higher octane, only 87 and 89. With 89 being an ethanol blend (10%).
The closest 91 octane gas is 35 miles away. I try to fill up everytime I have to be in that city.
My question is this. If I have to buy fuel in my town, should I go with the 87 or the 89 ethanol blend gas?
And should I use an octane booster with one or both of the above fuels?
Thoughts?!?!?
P.S. I own a 1999 TL-P.

The Spacer must be Met/Work with a CAI or RAM Intake to make it more Effective... Get a CAI and Ill Guarantee youll get a Boost in MPGs.
Also get the Outlaw Engineering Thermoblok spacers that should give you a kick to clean out the Manifold + EGR Passages getting you even more MPGs!
With all the Stuff Ive got in my TL-S Im getting Around 31-32 MPG Highway and 25-26 City! Almost like a 4 Banger!
And Those are not the Plugs you should be Using, V-Powers are not even Platinum they are like the Cheapest Plug NGK has... Get at Least Platinum NGKs if not Iridium IX..
ABOUT NGK PRODUCT CODES:
"P"ZFR"5"F-"11" =
P stands for Platinum
5 Stands for the Temperature that is for a TL-P
11 is for the Gap Size.
ZFR6F-11 = is a V-Power Plug ment for the TL-S!!! Since you dont Specify which Acura you Got I dunno if you got the Exact Piece for your Acura TL-P or TL-S but V-Powers are a ROYAL NO NO for Acuras.
Remember:
Double Platinum:
PZFR5F-11 = TL-P
PZFR6F-11 = TL-S
Iridium:
ZFR5FIX-11 = TL-P
ZFR6FIX-11 = TL-S

still running stock intake thought about upgrading but this is my beater. My other tl is superchargered so dont really mess with this one. I will have to double check on the plugs but i am almost positive that is the set i put in there last time.

If you have a Supercharged TL then you must Use a Colder Step!
In Example:
Supercharged TL-P must use the TL-S Temp!
So Instead of PZFR5F-11 use: PZFR6F-11 = TL-S
Supercharged TL-S must use a Colder Plug:
You could Still use and see how it Works: ZFR6FIX-11 but you Should use other Brand Spark Plug currently NGK doesnt have a Range "7" Spark Plug.

Shell V-Power is the best fuel to run. We have 94 here where i am. I've only had my 03 TL S for about a month now but i've run a full tank of 94 thru it and a full tank of V power and i notice little to no power difference. But there is a big difference in mpg, i couldn't be exact as i wasnt always driving slowly with mpg in mind but the ethanol percentage in 94 might even be higher than 10 percent, who knows. I would run V-Power tho, thats what i'm stickin with. its also good to note that there is a points program for petro which uses ethanol but no points program for shell which doesnt use as much...that probaly says something about their respective fuels

Wow, glad I don't live in Illinois any longer (I moved east the day Billy-Bob Clinton got hisself elected); here in New hampshire the delta is about $0.25, I have recently seen it for only a $0.20 premium as well, and our "Premium" is 93 AKI (note, not octane) here instead of 91 or 92.
