It should be close if you both know how to drive. It could still go either way. Just make sure that you dont race him until your car is broken in (>500mi). I am pretty sure my car was faster at 1000mi than when it was new.

I dont think you would be able to beat it because the 330 is lighter too.

Assuming ur both equally skilled drivers, he should have a slight edge. But u can still come back with the ever-so-witty remark:
"Oh yeah, well you paid $10k more. So ha!"

it really depends on what kinda of race you are talking about.

Off the line, the 330 is gonna be faster, because he got a stic, and RWD, too...

However you should be able to keep up and catup up perhaps.

If it's on the highway, then once you shift into 4th, it's over...

because he has no OD ratio, and our 4th and 5th are OD....

You're kidding right ? A WRX will soundly beat most cars costing twice as much,so price is irrelevant. BMW makes a solid vehicle with excellent resale, and although I don't think the pricing %100 fits the cars, I don't consider them a foolish purchase if you can afford one. Remember BMW is pretty much the benchmark for sport luxury vehicles in the world. Period. There has to be more than just marketing behind the awards, praise and incredible sales of these cars.

BTW, it is going to be really close but the BMW should win.

But with the extra $10K you save, you can start modding your engine and beat him! Just don't let him see your mods.

If he had an AT you'd be able to walk away from him.... You've got more power, but you're also going to give up a lot more in the tranny than he is. Probably be pretty dang close. Now once that mod from Rick Case comes out you'd have more of an advantage.

I get the strangest feeling TedC that since you spouted off about BMW's in my post...and this one...that you really really really like them or own one...am I correct?

Whatcha need to do, is hide a fat woman in his trunk! Then you'll blow him away!

Actually my wife bought one, although I own a Lexus. But that's not why I said that, I even comment on ClubLexus when someone makes derogatory or inaccurate remarks, it adds nothing to the conversation,. True, the 3 series does cost about $10k more, but it's purely speculative whether or not it's worth the extra $$$.

Not trying to flame you in this post, just noticing you like your opinion heard...and you're right...it is purely speculative...

Of course, the accuracy of the remark is subjective...and you could just as easily be in the wrong as viewed by most of the posters and Acura owners here...just something to think about...

All the reports put both cars (TLS and 330 manual) at about the same times 0-60. So, reaction time may matter. Like it has been said, price is price. The car is bought, so through the price out. If both of you got better tires, who would see the most improvement in times? Probably the TLS, because our stock rubber sucks. Who has the better chance of getting good times consecutively? The TLS because of the manual transmission. Add the equivelent mods to each car and which improves more? The 330, because of rear-wheel drive.
So... break in your car, and get back to us in... 1,000 miles, or 2 months, and tell us who wins after you two race.
PS: until you change spring/sways/tires, don't even try to think you can keep up on twisties, unless he cannot drive.

Well, I just would like to say that some people REALLY CAN"T DRIVE!!!

Not trying to be cocky here, but honestly, I was at the track with my TL once, there's a guy with chipped Audi S4 and I could keep up with him, and had the potential to pass him easily. I ain't kidding here...

All I have is 225/55/16 P7000SS tires, and the rest is stock. That guy got suspension mods and all that. it was a 6 spd. He blow me away on the straight, but I caught rite up in the 2nd corner.

My best friend has a 330 ci Manual and we've raced multiple times. The verdict is that to 60 mph, its neck and neck and whoever is ahead got a better launch. But by 100 MPH, I always have a slight edge. For some reason, I always pull on him in 3rd gear of the TL-S........

DAMN DO I LOVE 3RD GEAR OF THE TL-S.
BUT DAMN, HOW I HATE 4TH GEAR!!!

Hum..... I would say that's fair...

Because you got more weight, and FWD while more HP/Torque at the same time...

I am suprised that you can pull on him in 3rd gear... how much ahead are you when you redline the 3rd gear? Can't be that much rite? cuz all the german cars are designed for high speed.

But at the same time we do have fairly aggrassive 1-2-3 gear, and SLOW ASS 4-5 gears. Well, you get good MPG with that... can't complain.......

Actually the times of both cars are very similar. The TL-S had a faster 0-100 in C&D albeit by the slimmest of margins 0.1 seconds, and that was A/T vs stick. That being said those results are too close to say anyone would get spanked, it woudl be very close. If he had an A/T, I would say that would give you more of an edge.

In my opinion, a car with mannual tranny will be more disadvantageous to an average driver. For an average driver, mannual will do more harm than help because in most cases average drivers is not very good at driving stick efficiently. If a person does not know how to drive stick effeciently, a person who is driving an auto will have more advantage. Lot of people know how to drive stick but very few people know how to drive stick to their full potential. In magazines, all the drivers are professionals and when it comes to driving a stick, you really need to be a professional more so than a person who is driving an auto to have an advantage.

Just my thoughts.

Anyways, Good luck

Rather than ask a very speculative and controversial question, why not get your car first, break it in, then go to the track w/ your friend & duke it out and then tell us what happened?

Otherwise it always boils down to so&so mag says this vs that rag, blah blah blah. Man w/machine at a track will settle it.

TLS is little faster and slightly faster on the straight and I'm sure if you know how to take care of your TLS. I've beaten 2 BMWs 318 and 328, both are slower to us. 330ci could be close match but all the stats from the car mags stated that TLS is faster than 330ci. So we've got the winner, but i dare not to race on the corners we don't have good cornering since weight and width are larger than BMW 330ci. 330 ci is 18 inch shorter than TLS and you can beat him by 18 inch.

gotta race!
