a/c unit making werid noise, how much to fix.
well when i turn on the full auto climate i hear something spin up and it sounds kinda loud, also hear some sqealing. it feels cold enogh not perfect, also does the same thing with heat. i have to turn off the whole system to get rid of the sound. it all started when i used some refrigerant. it had a meter and says that i have a good amount not to much, but i let some out anyway, and i think that fucked it up more. i let it out like you would on a tire, i pressed the stem and the air pressure droped. so now that my noob ass fucked it up how much to fix or am i just going to have to live without heating and ac since the noise is friggin anoying. thx in advance.

MY car is doing something similar I think. Mine sounds like something is stuck in the vents and when you turn it all the way on its blowing it around and making some wierd sound.

My shit does the same thing....I thought there was a hamster stuck inside somewhere. Only comes on when you turn the AC on and it kinda sounds like when your cd player tries to read a CD. Its annoying, but cant figure out wth it is.

Car: 2002 TL
My A/C was blowing fine althought it could have been colder(it also made the noise as described above when car is first started) so yesterday I went and bought the ARCTIC FREEZE AF-3 134a+ freon can from Discount Autoparts, it has a PSI gauge on the can itself which is supposed to display the pressure, I checked the pressure with the AC on full blast and it showed up around 20 PSI so I started to fill it, I would stop temoprarily to check the pressure and it never got past 40 PSI, then with the AC on full blast the compressor started struggling. It would click and try to turn over but would never turn over successfully, it just sounded like it was struggling to turn so after about 7-8 tries I shut off the car. I then checked the pressure with the car turned off and it was all the way in red at around 120 PSI. So then I manually drained it back to 45 PSI, alot of freon and oil came out so I haven't started the AC since, will take it to a mechanic today to check it out.
Do you guys think this freon overfill killed my compressor? I never should have messed with it in the first place. Unless you know what you're doing be extra careful with those freon cans. Hopefully, a complete drain and proper refill of the AC system will fix the problem but I'm already looking at compressor prices:

I would love to know the solution to this. Mine gives the (cd trying to play a cd sound) really loudly as well, and sometimes it is accompanied by the foulest stench ever. I took the car to the dealer and they could not replicate the problem and so therefore I still have the issue.
^^ Oh, and I agree that you probably weren't supposed to do that to the car either.

If you leave the AC unrepaired and let out the oil- you will have a MAJOR bill when you finally go to fix it
The gauge reads accurate with system on- ignore the resting reading
And oddly enough- when you add freon - the pressure DROPS
you want it between 20 and 40psi normally- yours may vary

Have you guys all checked the cabin air filter for clean and free of leaves and other debris?
I had to use the shop vac to clean the airbox when I changed mine- just a thought

Follow up:
I took the car to the mechanic yesterday and he hooked it up to the machine to test the A/C pressure and indeed it was a bit too high with the A/C on. So I dediced to evacuate and refill the entire system, after evacuation we found out that there was an extra 6oz of freon in there (22oz is recommended) I had 28oz as a result of the overfill. The compressor was not hurt since I turned it off as soon as I noticed struggling and didn't touch the A/C since. So basically do not mess with the over-the-counter Arctic Freeze freon bottles if you don't know what you're doing. I had them put in synthetic oil into the system and I must say after it circulated through the compressor the loud noise which everyone is complaining about when you first turn your A/C in the morning is gone. My A/C is ICE COLD right now and the compressor is extra quiet. If you have plenty of miles on your TL and you're tired of that noise I would recommend you evacuate and refill your A/C system and make sure you have them put synthetic oil in there with the freon, it will definitely make it much colder and quiet it down (for a $100 job its worth it).
I also replaced my cabin filter, so not only is the A/C ice cold but fresh smelling also. In case anyone is wondering my pressure readings are at 40-45 PSI (LOW-car on, A/C on) and 150-180 PSI (HIGH-car off)
Tomorrow I'll do the SeaFoam treatment and switch to fully synth Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w-30 engine oil, since most people here recommend that.
Cheers to healthy TL's

Can yoi be a little bit more specific on what exactly will solve this annoying compressor sound. Sorry but not sure what you mean by 'evacuate the A/C system?' the rest make perfect sense.
Thanks for the clearification....!!
