burning smell...???
about 4 months ago....i was bored in a parking lot waiting for someone. So with the gear in park i was just revving the engine but only once did i hit the rev limiter at i think 5k or 5.5k. after i hit the limiter i started to smell a burning smell coming from the exhaust or engine bay. the engine was warm not cold and the oil was abit past its due date for a change lol. what caused this? what problems can occur? i see no problems now though.
stop revving the car in park!!!! really really really bad for it!
Please read the owner book!!!
Engine has a seperate rev limiter at 5000 --to protect the engine,
Allows higher rpm when in gear only
You probably got the cat convertor super hot sitting there and revving with no cooling airflow to it. Not good for it~
Did it smell like rotten eggs? Did it go away? Is the car running different?
Inside the cat is a screen covered with special metals- melt part or all of that and it wont flow proper amount thru it= loss of power and bad for engine due to excess exhaust pressure
The car depends on correct airflow from inlet air filter to exhaust tip
Please read the owner book!!!

rotten eggs is generally hot cat from revving/temp whether racing or at idle
(I hope he didnt rev it 5000 for 40 seconds solid)
or in extreme cases of -no water in the battery- that will also smell like rotten eggs
Most often its an exhaust temp issue

im not that stupid lol, i was going up THE RPM gradually and letting off then doing it agian for 40 seconds
and no i do not take my 1999 acura TL automatic and sit in a parking spot and rev the car to the rev limiter... do you?
wasnt condemming the guy, just common sense not to treat your car that way. especially if its your DD and/or your only means for transportation

I've done it to the TL- to test free rev limiter, and when testing airflow/inlet modifications, new crank pulley...there are reasons its ok to do
AND reasons they set nuetral/park rev limit at 5000-
valve float is possible on free rev- thats same result as breaking a timing belt on the freeway
No, I personally wouldnt rev it more than 2-3 times/revs and then start driving,
and not on a cold engine... learning is part of growing up and driving..regardless of age.
The tv car repair shows start an engine and rev it in park a few times immedialty- with the hood open so you see how much it jumps~
somehow the air inlet noise and clattering internals are supposed to make it a better car?
Or they are listening for unusual noises- loud engine type things?
Most drivers have had the engine to redline in a few gears, ~over-used~ the brakes, and generally had a lot more fun in the TL,, over their past rides (show of hands?)
And look how many are still running fine

(driving fun) is one thing... doing an imaginary 90 mph in the same spot is different
how else are you supposed to get realistic practice before track days?
Sit in the car with the throttle at full in park- bumping off the rev limiter...
slam the brake pedal and full back on the throttle badaabadaaabadaaa
You certainly wouldnt want someone doing that on the road~ right?
Does going 90 in one spot count if you are doing victory donuts?

and if you can manage to do donuts in your TL.. i'll send you a freshly baked pizza lol
