Brakes and Rotors

I have an 2001 Acura TL. Bought it brand new. It now has 40000 miles. I have done all of the scheduled maintenance religiously. I've even used Acura's website to track each transaction.

Today, when I brought my car in for the 2001-03 recall and 3000 mile oil change, the service tech told me:

"We recommend that you replace the rear brakes in the next 3000 miles. And, you may need new rotors."

Is this normal? I really didn't think I'd need new brakes after owning the car for only 3 years. I would like to know if I should have done something different. I've been taking the car in every 6 months or so for service. I would have thought that the dealer would have noticed something during previous visits.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

The stock rotors suck in the TL. I am surprised that you didn't have any issues with your rotors for 3 years. There are pretty of people who have trouble with their warped rotors including me. That's the reason I went aftermarket.

Is the car older than 48 months? Definetly below 48,000 miles. Go to the dealer and tell them that the stearing wheel vibrates when applying your brakes. Mention that there is a (T)echnical (S)ervice (B)ulletin on the subject (from Alldata.com: TSB#01-017 MAY 03 Brakes - Pedal/Steering Wheel Vibrate When Braking) and that you would like to have that issue corrected. If you ask nicely, most likely you'll get new free pads and turning of the rotors. If you bitch loud enough, you might even get the rotors re-surfaced, and if you threaten a lawsuit, heck, I wouldn't be surprised if they install new rotors and pads for ya.

deyum 3 years?! i have to get new brakes every year. screw the OEM crap, go with rotora slotted rotors and either axis metal or ebc greenstuff pads. 4 rotors and 4 pads cost around 450 i think

I have had issue with my TL brakes as well. (2003 w/ 47K). The Lousville dealer replaced my front brake pads with a new "heat dissipating design" last Friday. The trued my rotors and said I was good to go.

resurfacing rotors is just a temporary solution. Rotors warp due to heat and if you have thinner rotors they will warp faster. If you can get new rotors. If not, get your rotors resurfaced and new pads. Start saving up for some performance rotors and pad unless you don't mind taking it to the dealer for warped rotors till your warranty is up.

At like 24k miles I think I need new pads, can anyone recommend some? I see that a lot of people mention the EBC Greenstuff ones.

I had my front rotors resurfaced once. I have to press a lot more than before to brake. Do i need front and rear or just front?

Thanks!
