Brake Pad Clarification ('00 TL)
Question for the group:
I need to replace the brake pads on my 00 TL, and have run into a bit of conflicting information.
Specifically, what are the OEM pads made of? Ceramic, or Semi-Metallic?
I've searched and advanced searched this subject. I believe the answer is ceramic, but wanted to have it verified before I made my purchase. (I plan on turning the OEM rotors.)
If anyone has suggestions on pads, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks,
czar

You guys rock!
It never ceases to amaze me how much knowledge is shared on this board.
I plane on just having the oem rotors turned- will the EBC Green Stuff pads work well w/those, or should I just get the ceramic mix pads at Advanced Auto, NAPA, Auto Zone. etc?

You may want to put the money that you would spend in turning towards a better rotor like a brembo blank or rotora. The OEM rotors warp easy and like stated cant be turned much and once done tend to warp sooner. If you plan on running the turned oem rotor, youmay want to stick with a pad like the satisfied, EBC OEM, or akebono

I've tried the green stuff pads and was not all that impressed,at high speeds the car does not stop well, the after market rotors i got are great it's been about 1.5 years i have them and are still not warped, they need a litle turning and that's it,the pads are finished and decided to try out PBR pads,as for the green stuff, too much dust not enough bite. I'll keep you posted on the PBR pads.

There's your problem 1st timer
You have glazed the brakes so they are not at full gripping power - easy fix on a long private stretch of road
There is a process of repeated near stops from 30 and 40 mph about 5 to 10 times
Its called bedding in the brakes
Try search for that
My choice of pads is HAWK HPS- High Performance Street
They work really well all the time and if that means a little sooner replacement- hey brakes are cheap and easy to do.

I was just giving the Readers Digest version for him - hoping he would do the search and find the whole answer.
Yes, I agree, easy drive new rotors and pads to get some normal heat and cool cycles in them, that may be a few days or a few hundred miles depending on the driver.... THEN do the full bed in procedure.
The box of brake pads should contain specific instructions for that product
