Brake Fluid Flush Necessary?

I brought my car in for state inspection the other day and they said that I needed a brake fluid flush that would cost $100+. Is this a necessary procedure, and are they charging too much? TIA!

um not really, you can flush it every day if you choose, but typically brake fluid for the average joe will last 3-4 yrs, maybe more. i'd say at about the 100k pt a flush would be good. but $100? do this, go to autozone, get yourself a $5 pint. Go home, get a plastic hose to attach to the bleeder screw, have someone pump the brakes 3 times and hold then open and close the bleed screw quickly and always make sure the master cylinder is topped off, just keep repeating until the fluid is clean like what your putitng in. Go LF, RR, RF, RR in that order. Take about 30min.

Thanks for the info!!! Its been about 4 yrs since I've had my car with only 45k miles so I guess its a 50-50 in terms of whether its needed or not. And since I'm mechanically handicapped (figuratively), I'm at their mercy. I'll see if I can get a price break with all the other stuff I'm doing. Thanks again!

According to my 2000 shop manual, the order is LF RF RR LR. Look at some of the "one man" brake bleeders. If you are having someone help you, it's easy and steady on the brake pedal pumping....no bouncing up and down on the pedal.

well, that is the order i went LF, RF, RR, LR, but when i was looking at a brake bleeding company, mityvac, they stated front wheel drive cars use diagonal braking systems so the LF and RR are connected, RF and RR are connected, and to bleed them LF, RR, RF, RR.

Don't know what to tell you, my 99-00Acura's shop manual states LF RF RR LR also. If you don't like or believe it, do it your way

I would go with the service manual instead of Mityvac. I think that's more of a general statement if you don't have a service manual handy.

I i dont think its necessary. If you want it done do it yourself, or call around to a few brake shops. They could bleed them in just a matter of 10 min or so
