Bouncing RPMs...

And before you can IACV, please read...

My RPMs bounce when under light throttle. Meaning gased around 2000 RPMs, the engine will rev slightly (200 RPMs) every few seconds. When I put the cruise control on at 70, I can stare at the tachometer. It's about every three or so seconds that the engine will rev. It's not just the gauge, I can hear the engine as well.

I wouldn't think that this is the IACV because the engine is completely normal at idle.

Any ideas?

could be your torque convertor not holding the engine load. could be a bad spark plug or coil pack. could be a clogged injector.

It did seem to lessen when the tranny was replaced, but it didn't complete vanish.

I definitely had this before the Thermoblok spacers. I think it might have started after the pulleys, though. Would pulleys cause this?

I also had this before I change the plugs to Denso Iridiums. So, not the plugs. Maybe a coil pack?

I have a worn spot in my AEM filter (not a hole, but almost), would that effect anything?

It's revving when you put it on cruise control at 70 mph? Does your speed change when this happens?

RPMs change at highway speeds in cruise control and your speed doesn't change? Sounds like your torque converter might be slipping.

The dealer may not have replaced the torque converter when they did your tranny.

hmmm...I thought it was all in the same. The tranny was replaced due to a "torque converter failure."

Once you're transmission is in lock-up (like going 70 in cruise control on the highway) if the RPMs change, your speed should change as well. Pushing the brake, or moving the gas pedal too far (either up or down) will cause it to go out of lock-up.

Hmm - maybe you have a short in your brake switch (the one that turns your brake lights on) and it's causing you to come out of lock-up.

If you were closer, I'd have you run by the shop and we'd check it out for you...

It doesn't sound like a brake problem. The problem will occur when on a level plane. The revs are like neutral revs, ones that wouldn't effect speed. It would make since to be the torque converter then, wouldn't it? The cruise control will stay engaged the whole time. The RPMs will jump up quickly and then fall back down slowly about 100-250 RPMs.

BTW, it doesn't matter which speed the cruise control is set at, that was just an example.

Yeah - the torque converter could be coming in and out of lockup (for whatever reason).

Nope. Well, do you mean reving it in neutral/park? It doesn't do it at idle or no throttle.

Then id agree with fla-tls. If its only doing it while driving but your speeds arent fluctuating it sounds like a torque converter issue

Did you have the climate control on (air conditioning?). When the A/C compressor engages the ISC servo is supposed to raise the RPM just a bit to compensate for the HP loss.

That's what I thought. I'm not going to the dealership yet. They'll just say they don't notice anything. I basically will have to wait for the CEL to come on.

Oh, it's not the ECU and/or climate control.

Thanks for everyones help.
