This has been posted before. It is where the switch goes on the Inspire (Japanese version of the TL) for the electronically-controlled fold-in side mirrors. And no, you can't get that option here, and if you do want to get them and add them you supposedly lose the heating function.

Used this button to install Escort 8500 direct wire Smart Cord.
Removed components & label from Escort housing and installed them in stock button. Looks factory.

Smart cord has a green power indicator, a red radar indicator, and a remote mute button. When you are using radar detector in dark mode the only visual indicator of radar detection is down low and out of site. The mute button mutes audio, typically on X band

Hey psmart2,

That install looks great! I've got an Escort 8500 also and have been contemplating where/how to install the direct wire smart cord - now I know the best location

Where did you end up mounting the detector itself? Did you find a convenient location to tap 12VDC?

The detector is mounted to the right of the mirror, fairly high. Invisible from the outside as it is behind windshield tint. I had to SHOO GOO the suction cups to the window (wouldn't stick to the black mesh looking stuff above mirror very well). If you haven't used SHOO GOO beore it is great stuff. You can get it at Wal-Mart in the sporting goods section. Another name for it is Household Goop. It's kind of like silicone, it can glue anything to anything for life. If you want to get it off however, it comes off inone piece. Have used it for years in RC car racing, nothing better.
I had a car audio installer buddy do the install, sorry don't know where he tapped the 12v.

Very very nice indeed! Now you need to post installation instructions!

How's your experience with the Passport? I'm thinking of getting a radar detector some time soon. I find myself going 15-25 mph over the speed limit all the time in my TLS, and it's only a matter of time until the po-po aims his radar gun at me

I really like the 8500, lots of features, easy to program, has alerted me in plenty of time to avoid speed traps. Highly recommended.

I've had the Passport 7500 for about a year now and it has served me well.

The 8500 has much improved Ka band detection. I would highly recommend the passport if you're in the market for a radar detector.

I had the same problem and it was pi$$ing me off. My detector was always falling off. Then I had an idea.

I used some of that clear packing tape that you use to.... well.. um.. tape packed boxes, and put it over the mesh. It creates a smooth surface for the suction cups to mount to and it's completely invisible. You only need enough for the suction cups to mount to.

Works very well. The true test will come this winter when the windshield and the suction cups get cold.

As for Escort, I have an older 4500 and I love it. It has paid for itself many times over.

A while ago I posted some information about a panel by the E-Brake that has some 12volt constant, and some 12 volt "keyed" untapped outputs that you can latch onto. The keyed are only hot when the key is in the on position.

Several weeks ago I posted instructions for installing the Passport remote display in the blank button space. Here's the thread:

http://acura-tl.com/forum/showthread...360#post166807

It's not the easiest mod in the world, but well worth it in results. It truely looks factory installed

Actually... folding mirrors would kick ass! My dad's ML320 has automatic folding mirrors and they are heated... Why would heating and having them motorized be a problem?
