Bike rack for TL?
I don't know if this will apply to you, but I have a stealth trailer hitch installed on my TL and bought the type of bick rack that fits into the trailer hitch. This way I can use my trunk for other stuff (and fit more than one bike) and don't have to risk scratching the roof or the trunk with those other types of bike racks. Good luck, let us know how you made out.

Having used the trunk mounted bike rack, I would recommend you get the type that uses a trailer hitch (Yes the downside is this means getting a hitch.)
The upside is there are several suppliers of hitch mounted bike carriers (Yakima, Thule, Saris, etc) and hitch mounted carriers will:
1) Keep the bikes away from the cars bumpers (reducing scratches or even the chance of getting a scratch on your
car)
2) Keep the bikes away from each other (which scratchs the bikes)
3) You can get swingout racks that allow you to swing the bikes away from the car (while on the rack) and get
into your trunk.
It has also been my experience that your choices are extremely limited at local retail stores. You are much better purchasing at a online store. (Better prices and selection)
Whatever your choice you can get a good idea of the vendors, types and prices available at:
http://www.rackwarehouse.com/. There are other websites that sell these products.
Good luck

I've been researching the same topic and have arrived at the conclusion that a hitch mounted bike rack would be the best choice for the TL. There is no risk of scratching the paint with a hitch rack. Hidden Hitch makes a nice looking hitch. The finish seems to be fairly rust resistant. As for the rack, 2-3 bike capacity models are fairly common from many manufacturers.

Yakima
If you end up going with a hitch mounted rack, I have found that Yakima hitch racks are a bit sturdier and more stable than ones by Thule. The one that I use now that I like a lot is the RimRoc, which you can see at http://www.yakima.com/products/dynamic/8002578_2.html if you are interested. The part that I like most about it is that it all folds up to one vertical group of bars, rather than having two (or more) horizontal bars that stick out and extend the length of the car while not in use.
