Whats a VR tranny?

 

Velocity Resources out of florida (i think florida). they offer a beefed up tranny for the tl. titanium torque converter fins, kevlar clutchpacks, etc. i think it was slightly less than $3k for a new tranny shipped door to door.

to my knowledge they are no longer called Velocity Resources but they are still around. there was a thread on that subject not too long ago if i recall.

no joke. i don't think there are too many members who have purchased one but i would definitely be interested. once my 100k miles are up i have seriously thought about just changing it out and getting it done with. $3k is not a bad investment for a bulletproof tranny.

a member named optiq got a bullet proof tranny from florida...im not sure if it was VR...i think there was a post recently about it...the shop turned out to be fraudulent.

 

i know a few people from acu ra wor ld. com have that tranny put in along with a 3.5L swap!

 

from what ive read, some of the earlier "bulletproof" trannies have also failed

not a VR tranny. crappy rebuild by a crappy shop. it's unfortunate too because they gave him a hard time after it crapped out again.

well that i wouldn't know about. but the early trannies i can understand. you have to learn by trial and error, but now they know and i haven't heard anything bad about them since i joined over a year and a half ago now.

these guys are good. quality products despite what other people may be hearing. everyone i know in the import circle praises them.

i got screwed over by the shop that did my supposed "upgraded tranny". i filed a complaint with the state and this fuckin asshole Ed, the owner of the shop had the nerve to lie and say that i have been racing the car and that i had a computer hooked up to the car's ECU. which are both a load of shit. so frustrated!!!

 

i'm sorry you got such a raw deal man, that really is a load of crap. hopefully you can prevail in small claims court or maybe the state will take action. what have you done in the meantime? did you end up buying another acura transmission or have you contact VR or anyone? just curious.

So far, the only upgraded transmission that has lasted is Serge's in his Accord V6 w/ 3.5 swap and supercharger. He has a Dr. Evil transmission. They haven't made one for the 5speed auto's yet but I'm sure they can do a good job looking at the high prise he gets in the accord forums. The website for them is

I have heard quite of bit of things about Level Ten. Good and bad however personally I have two friends out of 3 who received a transmission upgrade from them that the transmission failed on them however like I said, I haven't used them before so I'm not sure if they are good or bad.



Also I don't know if anyone is close to NJ but I heard this shop here is pretty good too when it comes to transmission work. I don't think they have done an upgraded tranny for any of our cars. I do know there is a guy here in Maryland with a 9sec GSX eclipse with their tranny and it hasn't broken yet so who knows.

i took it ot acura and paid 4500$ and they put one of theirs in there. its gor a 50k warranty and 5 years so im seeling this baby soon unfortunately

 

I could have built that with a 50k warranty for A LOT less. Things are only as "bulletbroof" as their warranties.

I talk to them also and they told me $4,500.00 plus a $700.00 core charge.I don't know any good shops in richmond,va. that I could this tranny installed at.

 

I believe there is an authorized dealer of the Dr. Evil transmission in VA well at least there is one on the website. I'm sure any transmission shop would be able to do the install for you or you could probably even do it yourself. Shouldn't be that difficult.

 

We don't have a B7XA tranny, the 2nd gen TL 5 speed is a B7WA. I'm not sure about interchangeability.

But they are working on multiple models, and I'm sure it won't be a big problem for them to work on the '00-'03 transmissions, too.

VR outsourced the tranny's they made to a shop next door (literally). It was called Ed's Transmissions. I think VR shut its doors. Anyways that transmission has been a piece of crap. So at the moment, the TL's don't have any options as far as the transmission goes. The only option would be to go custom.

 

No second gen TL's yet. Most are probably still under warranty.

I had a call about a CL - but he found that he was under waranty still as well.

humm. well from what i learned the huge issue (thru acura) was that the 3rd gear clutchpack was seeing over 350 deg C, and i dont care what parts you stick in there that much heat parts just dont last. I guess acura has redesigned a few little parts/shafts to allow better coolant flow and smoothed out the metal clutch pack surfaces

 

Agreed. I hope Acura has redesigned the parts better in the newer versions. Since we haven't had to order parts for one yet, we haven't had to look into the aftermarket yet.

About 350 degrees - that's why I'm running Amsoil ATF. It's no fix, but for (relatively) little cost I can get a Z-1 spec fluid that can handle occasional temps in that range.

If we get one in, I'll certainly post a pic of the inside hub arrangement. Honda's typically have the drums more dispersed and connected by gears - as opposed to domestic (certainly GM - with the 4T60 and 4T80) where the clutch packs are linear - sort'a like they took a rear wheel drive unit and bent it into a T.

 

Just noticed - you wrote 350 C. That's over 650 F!!!

There's no fluid that will handle that - if that's true.

yea the tl tranny is a 3 shaft design. i have a crappy phone pic of it, i do have the parts that ive been wanting to take a pic of for every one to see what is actually dying on our cars.

i would have but i was to lazy to convert it

Isn't the transmissions in these performance shops suppose to be custom?

 

Custom - as in the gears are other hard parts are machined out of billet steel? - you couldn't afford the transmission

Custom - as in beefed up parts like Kevlar clutch material and problem fix kits (like sonnex kits)? - someone has to mass produce the parts (and to my knowledge nobody does)

okay... i know next to nothing about the internal workings of cars, so bare with me if my question is stupid.

Is it possible that there is another cause outside of the transmission that's causing the tranny to fail? It just seems that if it really is a design problem of the tranny all of the car will fail at about the same rate as oppose to just 5-10% of the cars right?

 

I dont get your question??? are you asking if some thing is causing the tranny to fail other than the trannies bad design? Nothing is causing them to die, other than a bad design. Honda knows whats wrong, and i along with a few others have said why. Heat and poor design of 3rd gear is whats causing the failure. There is no ryme or reason as to why some fail and others dont and the time/mileage
