Bad headlight bulb?
Bad headlight bulb?
Hey guys. I have an '03' TL, and one day my passanger side headlight turned kinda purple... Later that night, it started flickering on & off. The next morning I turned my lights on, and they both worked fine! But sure enough after about 15 minutes, it turned purple again. Later on that night the light went out completely and has remained that way ever since. Does this mean that the bulb itself has burnt out? Or does the ballast need to be replaced?

Okay... I have no idea how to edit my post... so heres what I've decided... At first, I was gonna go to Acura and buy a new bulb. They told me $125 + tax... But after reading some of the other headlight related threads... I think i've decided to just buy a new pair of bulbs (I've been looking at the Kaixen 6000K Crystal White D2C... Pair for $119)... Heres my question... according to the Sylvania Lamp Replacement Guide (thats the website that automotivelightingusa.com reccomends you to use to figure out which size bulbs you need) my headlight bulbs are "HID-D2R". what is the difference between D2C and D2R? will the D2C bulbs fit in my car? if i buy the new Kaixen bulbs, can I still keep the OEM ballasts?

D2R is what our car needs
They usually go pink then die
Phillips is the popular brand and get the stock 4300k color, higher numbers are not brighter on the road and will get you a ticket
Replace in pairs- check internet for deals, safest to buy the top brand
Swap the bulbs left to right and see for sure if thats the problem

Earlier this year, I bought a pair of brand new, in the box, Phillips 4300K D2R bulbs for $68.49 shipped via eBay. So you can find great deals on eBay.
The lowest price through a dealer that I could find was $200 a pair + tax.
If you install them yourself, be sure not to touch the glass part of the bulbs with your bare hands. The oils from your skin can cause a premature failure.
And you'll also need a Torx tamper-proof T-20 tool to access the bulbs. The tamper-proof Torx fitting has a hole in the center. I found a Stanley set at my local Wal-Mart for about $7
As mentioned above, definitely replace the bulbs in pairs since they change color over time. If you replace just one you can get a mismatched look. You can keep your "good bulb" as a backup.
I'd just stick with the 4300 Kelvin bulbs to get the maximum useful light on the road. Some forum members have reported that even the 6000K bulbs were noticeably less bright and that things got even worse in the rain.

I may have a used ballast that might be going up for sale if anyone needs one. I just got into an accident this morning and my drivers side headlight was busted up. The ballast and everything else seems to be fine, but I'm sure the body shop will replace it anyway. PM if anyone is interested.

I took a look under the hood, and it seems like its a real big bitch to repalce the HID bulbs.
Now, I dont need to replace my bulbs just yet, but, is there an easy way to replace them without taking the whole shit apart ?

Take your time and don't apply too much force so you don't damage anything.

So I got so many responses to the ballast I was selling that I decided to put it up on ebay to make everything fair. For anyone who was interested, you can find it at auction number: 150112101230
