Axle or Something else...

Sup guys,

I just got my motor mounts done due to some extreme vibrations in my car, long story short, part of the vibration was caused by two broken mounts, but the majority of the problem still exists..

I want to see if someone here can possibly guess what this could be.. MY GUESS IS AN AXLE or 2 AXLES

BUT!

when i drive ( accelerating from 0-40) there is a very strange vibration, in fact the vibration is almost like the tires take turns WALKING like a human does... i know this sounds retarded, but when i go faster it feels like someting is HOPPING for every revolution the tires make.

I've never experienced this for any cars that ive ever owned and its kind of scary because I thought it was something totaly different from what i fixed.... CAN anyone help me!!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds like you have bad tires. Try swapping the front and rear tires and see if the problem disappears or changes. If it does, you need to get new tires. It could also be that your car needs an alignment. Have you hit a pothole or speed bump a little too hard?

or even possibly hit the curb kinda hard on accident? I second the alignment suggestion... after you check the tires of course. Directional tires need to rotate a certain way... if they're put on incorrectly, that may cause that... but then again I'm not 100% sure on that... someone correct me if I'm wrong

Get the alignment done. Mis-alignment will ruin your tires if you neglect it. If you still have problems after the alignment, try rotating your tires and see if your symptoms change or disappear. Just because the tires are new doesn't mean they can't be defective. It's not very common but it does happen.

Tires? are they new? old? Cupped? Showing wear on the inner or outer tread? Rotate them and see if the same problem occurs. That should tell you a lot.

I had the same symptoms as you. Changed all the mounts first and it seems to help could still feel the vibrations. Changed both wheel bearings and still vibrations. Ended up changing both axles and no more vibrations during accelerations. I had about 102k miles on my 02 when it happened. Hope this helps.

Just because the tires are almost new doesnt mean that one may not be bad or that you have a bent rim.Rotate the rear tires to the front and see if it goes away. If so you know its one of the tires, You should get to a trusted mechanic and start with having the rims and tires inspected and balanced. If it continues then look into other things like axle or trans

What if you only change one axle? My car is in the dealer and I have to pick it up this afternoon. They are replacing the right axle and have to troubleshoot to see if the left is also bad. Meantime I get a turbocharged RDX to drive around. I took the technican on a drive with me. He said he didn`t have ot wiat until I went to 50 because that's where I felt it but he stated he knew it was surely the axles and that he wasn`t sure which side it was. So today I I will my car up and tell you guys if that ugly and uncomfortable vibration is gone.

If only one is bent/damaged only one needs to be replaced

How can you tell which one it is? Wouldnt the axle click when turning as well if it was an axle?? I also have this 'wobble' when accelerating, when i make a rapid acceleration it is more pronounced but it goes away when i hit a constant speed, or when accelerating at higher speeds. I mean i cant really tell if its just on one side, maybe its both..!? Thanks

is it worse while you turn a certain way? Sounds like they are more noticable under heavy loads, high gears don't provide as much stress through the axles.

Unhappy

It does it pretty much any time I accelerate, mostly only when the car is straight. When turning it is not as noticeable, but once I straighten the car out and continue accelerating it gets more noticeable. This would be turning at a light or something, starting from a stop or slow (5-10mph) speed. It's very odd..

Well, not as noticeable during turn is a bit odd but may have inner cv joint issues. Are you able to locate the noise? Turning at higher speeds usually involves less actual turning, if you know what i mean, so may account for the higher speed thing.

Have you crawled under your car and inspected your cv boots by chance? I would do that and get back to us.

Actually it doesn't make any noise, there is no grease at the moment anywhere around the inside of the wheels, but I do remember several months back a bit of grease splat around the wheels. The boots are ok, they are dry and have no holes and aren't leaking. When turning it doesn't even make noise, making a full circle turn in either direction. Just accelerating it wobbles. And that is silent as well.

The last time, and only time that I have taken it to the dealer was back in November for a transmission oil change. And the timing belt and water pump etc., was done in December. Oil changes I do on my own. I guess that would be as far as it would go for a tune-up
