axle help please

couple of things -
I did my drivers side axle yesterday and now my ABS/VSA/! lights are on? everything runs well and seems right. What did I miss?
Also - while I had the axle nut sockets on loan from the car parts store i decided to check my passenger side axle which I did a few months back and saw something I think might be bad - The plunge end (not the end by the steering knuckle, the tranny end) - With everything tightened up I can still grab the end and move it out enough to see the splines from under the car? It doesnt come all the way out of the tranny, but probably a good inch of spline is visible. I can push it back in so it is snug but it also can just be pulled back out again. What gives?
Thanks for your help!

it is, the shaft is not moving, just the plunge end at the tranny.

You're either not getting it seated all the way back in the trans, you could have a weak or missing snap ring that holds it in the trans, or you could have an extra snap ring stuck on the axle that's keeping it from fully seating. You could also have an axle that's a little short.

Take a close look at the tone ring on the driver's side axle. Is it beat up? Does it have any cracks or missing teeth? Is there a tone ring at all?

On the outer cv joint, about 10mm outboard of the boot, there should be a toothed wheel about 4" in diameter. It will have teeth about 2mm wide and 5mm high. The wheel speed sensor "counts" the teeth as the wheel rotates to give the ecm/bcm wheel speed. These dimensions are from a memory almost as sharp as Abe Simpson's.

When you removed your axle did you unplug the sensor or pull to hard and rip the wire? That would be the first thing i would look at

The ABS sensor probably isn't seated all the way down. Take it out, clean it, and apply a small amount of lubricant and re-seat.

i am also noticing a small amount of tranny fluid leaking from where it meets the axle. Can i just loosen the axle nut on the knuckle and bang it in tight?

It's possible that the seal was damaged during axle installation, or when it was moving around in the trans while the snap ring was missing.
