Audi 1.8t. How fast is it?
I don't do this too often, but recently had a little stoplight race with a guy in an Audi and I'm sure it was the 1.8t Audi A4. I dusted him, but was surprised at how he kept up with me.
How fast is the A4 1.8t? Actually this is one of the cars I was considering before my TL-S, but didn't want a 4 cyl. And didn't want to pay $30k for a 4 cyl.
BTW, it is a truly beautiful car. Sometimes I regret not getting one, but I love my TL-S.
Thanks.

that's a very open ended question....because there are many different 1.8T A4's
There are manual and auto tranny one and FWD and AWD ones. For a stoplight race, the manual AWD one is probably the most potent. But driver skill is very relevant in a manual. From the factory they aren't terribly fast. About 16-16.5 second quarter mile. The cool thing about this car is if you add a $500 chip, you get about 50 hp and 80 lb ft or tq. The car is very drivable but still not very fast. Although I've seen a guy run a 14.6 with just a chip. Obviously he can drive. The stock turbo is very small and peaks early with a lot of tq, but the top end isn't so great as it stops making boost at 5500 RPM or so. Then there is the real aftermarket stuff. There are a few bolt on turbo kits out there for that car that make it an easy 13 second car and I've seen a buddy run a 12.9 @106. So these cars have decent potential for a 1.8 liter.
So you will dust a stock A4, you will most likely beat a chipped A4 unless you run into a really good driver, But even then the TLS has an advantage. On a roll at highway speed a c hiped A4 is pretty good as it is geared short and stays in it's power band well from 80-120. But when it comes to a big turbo A4, you have probably met your match. BTW, I run a GT25 ball bearing turbo in my A4 :>) Waiting get the headers in Ferizo's car and for me to put some finishing touches on my car then we'll hit the drags and do some highway runs for fun.

I'm still trying to think of some nice long, straight, smooth roads where we can safely do some testing and not disturb anyone. I'm definitely hitting the strio when they open, but I think it might be better for us to do some roll on testing. Maybe Ben will get involved as well to make it even more interesting.

great just what I need to race...a 12 second s4!:wow: You know me, I'm game but we gotta get those headers installed and I am still thinking about the icebox!
the road around my house is good but only late at night and its not all that long. Rte 9 gets me nervous although there are a few good, safe stretches. Maybe Ben knows some spots.

Oh and Lycos, as Ray said, a modded and properly tuned A4 is fast! You just have to be willing to dump some serious change into it. You can also supercharge the TLS for more or less the same money but then you have to worry about the tranny.
Ray's A4 is pretty damn sweet! Looks good and has the balls to back it up!

I have a silver B5 with black interior...like most of the Audis out there. I really wish I got a more original color and a wagon now that I look back.

no really recent pics of the car. It has a nice tint now. I have some S4 side skirts sitting in the garage waiting to be installed when the weather gets nicer. I also have a modified S4 front bumper on the way. The middle cross members are removed and are filled in with mesh that matches my RS4 front grill on the hood. There are 2 nice big open areas in the bumper, the middle ones is nice so air can get to the front mount intercooler when I get one.

I almost forgot how much better the wheels look painted than stock! Those will make some fine winter wheels when you get the 18s!
I also forgot how good your car looks clean! As a matter of fact I forget what the fvck my car looks like now that I haven't had it for three weeks!!! (sorry just venting)

I think the VWs are FWD (while the majority of Audis are AWD). If you are talking about a golf then it should be much lighter. I guess the best way to find out would be to look up the specs for both.

Be careful messing around the the Golf/Jettas with the 1.8T. The newer ones with the AWP engine code are VERY fast with just a chip and exhaust. Usually anywhere from 98-101 mph in the 1/4th mile depending on the car and its driver. A guy locally runs 13.9 @ 101 on pump gas in a GTI with nothing but the spare removed.
Either way, as Ray was saying. A4's with the stock turbo aren't that fast, but once you put a big turbo on it (like Ray and I both have), you are looking at solid 13 second passes on pump and VERY low 13 second to 12 second passes on race gas.
Oh, a pic of my car...
Here ya go...
Edit again, 80% of the A4's sold in the states are quattro not FWD. The FWD cars depreciate incredibly fast as nobody is looking for an Audi w/out quattro.

are the VW 1.8t's essentially the same as the Audi 1.8t's?

Haha......yeah. My mom picked up a TL-S about a week ago. The BBQ was fun. They released the FMIC. Looks great and you can get it powdercoated black for the total stealth look. Looks like its not going to need software either. We'll make sure the new Beta reacts optimally with the FMIC before the final software revision is released.

how do you like the TLS? They are so smooth and comfy. Pretty fast. All around great car...especially for the $$$. I would prefer a 6 speed CLS though. My mom was looking at them a few months ago, but got an RL instead. She really wanted a TT coupe, but my dad vetoed that as he is a boring person and hates coupes. She looked at the TLS but decided to take the boring route with an RL. We already have a 93 legend and it's the same car to me. Same exterior and interior. The Legend is a little tighter and firm riding, the RL is more luxurious and soft. Too bad she didn't get the TT.

Yeah, Mom wanted a car that she could haul her friends around in. Had she gotten a coupe, it would have been a G35 (those things are freaking beautiful). Either way, its a nice car for the $$ definitely. She likes it but is still getting used to it coming from a german car. We've never owned a honda product before, so its a bit of an adjustment for all of us.

FMIC = front mount inter cooler?
I havent seen many A4 's with FMIC... Actually ive only seen one A4 with that... Some guy who drives a hooked up Oettinger A4 around my neighborhood. Hes had it for years so im figuring its fabricated. Shiet sounds so aggressive w/ blow off valve, he drives like a maniac tho...
