ATF Mixing Honda + Acura??

i'm about to do a drain and fill but only have 2 quarts of acura ATF fluid on hand. is it ok to mix 1 quart of honda ATF fluid? from what i know they are the same fluid with different part numbers because of the of different "makes."

can someone chime in with experience with this?

There is no specific Honda brake fluid. Just make sure you use what the cap designates. I believe the TL is DOT 4.

It's worth a shot. Keeping the fluid fresh should help prolong the transmission's life. The drain plug shouldn't be too hard. I've done it before with a ratchet and had no problems removing it.

It's just a 3/8" square in the middle of the plug. I think I used a small extension. It shouldn't be on there super tight. It should be as tight as your engine oil drain plug.

mine was pretty tight, but yea Honda ATF-Z1 and Acura ATF-Z1 is the same exact thing. As far the drain plug, it should be too bad, just need a 3/8" rachet and you should be good, but the fill bolt is a pain. Its a 17mm and you'll need a long extension to get in there, and probably a breaker bar or a damn strong rachet lol. Good Luck!

I hear aliens live among us too.

You cant always go by what you hear. What may be hard for one may not be for others. Usually the filler bolt is tough to break, Mostly because of the amount of extension you have to use to get to it. If you have the oil jet it will be very easy to do

Quick question, how do I know if I have the oil jet kit? Noob question I know, I just did the 3x3 drain a couple of weeks ago and I couldn't tell if I had the jet kit or not. Also I had the transmission replaced about a a year and a half to two years ago. If anybody could chime in that would be great. Thanks guys, and sorry if I'm thread jacking I don't mean to.

^^ no worries.

i've seen cars with and w/o the oil jet so i know the difference. i think someone needs to take a picture for better visual.

no oil jet - huge bolt that says ATF on it.
oil jet - smaller blue bolt that locks down the oil jet. undo that blue bolt and lift the oil jet up.

hope this helps..

if you got a trans from acura 1.5 yrs ago its the new design case with the oiler built inside... like it should be

the external was a bandaid fix for not enough fluid to a certain area and the shafts and gears would sieze-break...very exciting at 70

a shot of deep creep or wd or any penetrating lube on the edge of the fill and drain plugs- left overnight if possible- it seeps down the threads and breaks the corrossion bond that holds them so tight

torque on atf drain bolt is 29 foot lbs- same as oil drain plug

alright gang so i just finished the drain and fill.. all i have to say is DAMN MY ATF was brownish black.

if you haven't done this before like me, please do something good for your car and do it. i've been putting it off for years now and i'm glad i finally got to it. just to let you know, the factory fluid is red, and what came out of my car was brown/black and on its way to sludge. LOL.

the only thing that was a bitch was the drain plug because it was stuck tight. after i got that off, it was pretty much smooth sailing from there. the fill plug wasn't as bad either because i had an extention to get to it.

i did a 2x drain and fill because i didn't have enough ATF fluid to do it another time. the second time i drained it, it was a little less brown/black, but it was still pretty dirty. i doubt a 3rd time would really help that much. i think to get as much clean fluid in, you'd probably have to do it 10x no joke.

You would know because you would have had to pull it out of the trans to fill. If your trans was replaced 1.5 ago you dont have or need one.
