Approaching 100k Need your opinion

Hey Everyone,

Just wanted to get some opinions. I have a 02 tl s. I currently have 70k miles and is wondering what I should do.

Option 1
Keep the car and run until the tranny dies again. I heard from my dealer that they are starting to charge only for labor when the tranny dies after 100k. Please confirm this if anyone here is hearing the same thing

Option 2
Buy another car and trade this one in a few months. My plan was to get an s2k but I drive about 20k a year. Knowing how s2k owner drives, I wont be able to sell the car once Ive reached 60-80k because other s2ks are still at less than 30k miles.

Feedback is appreciated. Right now, the bluebook value for trade in is at around 14k.

Thanks

I had 89k on my '00 TL and decided that I would get rid of it while I had the chance. Tranny started to become jerky during 2-3 shifts. Just picked up a X5 4.4 Sport for the wife.
BTW - was on the original tranny.

Quick question. From somebody's idea long time ago, I thought Honda's transmission used to be prone to change at 100K (or it was only lasted up to 100K, old accord?). Is it true?

Sorry for thread hijacked

I would suggest to sell it before 100K. I have 02 TLS with 66K miles and it is on
new transmission for 2 months.. No slipping, but feel 2nd-3rd gear shift very jerky
at 5K RPM... I'll see how long this tranny will last.. I may try to find a certified pre-owned
Lexus or whatever to replace my TL-S although I really love the stiff steering and
suspension feel on TL-S..

Going over 100k on any car, regardless of make, increases the odds that something will break, something expensive. On TLs it's the tranny. On other cars it could be panels rusting out, electrical problems, engine crapping out, etc. Even if the car doesn't have problems, getting into an accident means you're not going to get much money for it and you're out a car that was running fine. These are issues that are common for anyone who keeps a car for a long time or many miles.

I'm just shy over 100K miles, and my tranny died. Acura fixed it all for free. =) I have also read on this forum that some people have been charged for labor, and also, I dont' remember who, but one guy got his tranny replaced around 114K miles. I guess its up to you if you want to keep it or not, but I love my car, and i'm going to try and keep it as long as possible.

A bunch of them broke before 50k, what do you call that? It is a known problem, fix it right... Acura Please. Breaking down pre-maturely is not the same as normally. Anyone knows the MTBF of our tranny? or Actura don't even have it because they didn't test it properly? Do we have anyone working for Acura in here? Read the tranny sticky section please.

At 93k I dumped my '02 CL-S and purchased a '03 6-Speed. I loved the car, but the transmission issues really bothered me. I shopped around and for the price I couldn't get anything similar to what I already had.

Mike, I have to respectfully disagree with part of your post. No doubt I agree that certain wear and tear items end up having to be replaced in the 100-150k range (like wheel bearings, motor mounts and so on) but no way should a tranny need to be replaced multiple times even when the car gets to that mileage. My car is on its 3rd tranny after 88k miles, and the constant influx of posts on this site about trannies biting the dust along with my personal experiences surely means that Acura has no true fix for the transmission problem. It was a defective design, period, and equates to a very costly repair (about $4,000 with labor). Since i only got 30k out to the first tranny and 58k after the second, I know my car is pretty much doomed by the time I hit 125k miles (hope to even make it that far before it goes again). But I know its only a matter of time until it will need tranny #4. I'd like to think the TL should be able to give 150k of reasonably trouble free miles with few major items needing replacement along the way. The tranny seems to be the only item that is consistently reported on about the TL. Unfortunately its so expensive to repair, and seems to give so few miles that it makes owning a TL past the warranty a VERY risky propsition even if the rest of the vehicle seems to be without a major issue. Its flat out gambling, and thats not any of us were expecting from Acura.

just so you know, KBB pricing is only good for private sales. if you intend to trade it in just be aware that most dealers go by NADA values, or at least i should say that it has been my personal experience that dealers use NADA.

keepingitclean - i too have about 70k miles now and i tell ya, i plan on keeping this car until it dies. i take good care of it now and i absolutely love it. at most i will buy a VR tranny for it but i intend to get many many more miles out of it. but this is just me, if you see something that catches your eye then by all means trade it in brother ::coughs::...G35X!! ::coughs::

Ah get the GTO. 6.0 litre 400hp 400 lb-ft Tq! way better than the G produces! And that v8 will sound way better than that 6 ever would!
