What's the 99 tank's capacity? Right now I'm averaging 22mpg (30% city/ 70% hw). I'll let the redline cleaner sink in (havent finish the bottle yet) and hopefully I'll get more mileage.

I just took the TL on a highway trip of about 200 miles. I filled it up before the trip 2/3 with 93 octane and 1/3 87 octane. It held 15.6 gallons before the click. I did not top off.

I then got on the interstate and set cruise at 60mph with the windows (on the passenger side lol) halfway down. No A/C. 51.7 miles later the needle had moved from being above the "F" line to even with it, so I decided to see how much gas it had used. I stopped at a gas station, started fueling. At $2.98, holding 1.34 gallons, it clicked. Again, I did not top off.

Then I did the math:

51.7/1.34 = 38.58mpg!

Since then, I've traveled 105 miles and it has moved 3 lines from "F". This is driving it really easy, though.

Those are hybrid mpg. I don't think all gas station has the same top off sensor. IMHO the only way to get a good estimate of the mpg is if you go back to the same station and pump.

Well there is a margin of error, but the tank initially held 15.6 gallons, went some more, and held 1.34 gallons. The margin of error can't be a huge one. The car was getting 36 mpg at the minimum, and that's assuming a pretty big error.

EDIT: FWIW both stations were RaceTrac.

i agree. there are big top off sensor irregularities. teh gasstation i always go to once it stops i can only get in like a 1/4 gallon more before it overfills. the station just down the street (newer) once it shuts off i can get (while it takes awhile due to the sensor) almost 3 gallons before it over flows

and why would you mix regular and premium?

Lightbulb Learned My Lesson

After pumping the "cheap" $2.56/gal. 87 octane crap for 6 months, my 05 TL started to run terrible. Knocking on start up, hesitation on acceleration, etc. I knew it was the gas because that was a calculated risk I was taking by puming the lower octane stuff. So went to the auto parts store and got a bottle of octane booster and put in tank of 87 I had just gotten and within 1/2 tank it was running well again. As much as the $2.71/gal. gets me, I will NEVER pump anything but the premium 93 octane again.

Lession learned... And yes I see the sticker inside the gas tank cover and have read the manual together with posts on this site about using the manufacturer recommended fuel.

Just a warning from one hard-headed owner to anyone who cares...
