Anyone know how to remove the speed governor?
I was absolutely sure that our TL-S/CL-S's were "drag limited" based on the info from Acura brochures and websites. This weekend i was chasing some bikes down I95 in NJ and hit the limiter at around 148mph(it just cut off the gas on me)- WHAT GIVES?? the car felt like it still had TONS of power... i'm sure i couldve squeezed out 170, and with the new tires, 150 doesnt feel fast in terms of stability.
Nehow, does neone know how to remove the governor? Has neone done this on the CL/TL?
(no flames about high speeds please)

The speed limiter is set to 147 MPH and it does not cut your gas. I hit the stop speed (147MPH) and held it steady for about 1 minute. I have no idea how to remove the speed limiter, but if you find out, let me know.

I've searched through the service manual several times and it makes no mention of a speed limiter on the TL. I've seen models that were speed limited (some 5th generation Civics) and the circuit was listed in the service manual. At any rate I'm sure it used the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) so, unless you modify that signal, there is no easy way to defeat it. Before anyone goes and yanks the VSS harness at the tranny... I can tell you that your automatic tranny will lose its capacity to "think" (i.e. drive like $hit) and your VTEC won't work -- neither of which are conducive to high speed driving.
As far as I know the top speed of the TL is, in fact, drag limited.

If you had a CT header and had tires to the correct pressures, you may be able to squeeze 160 and a bit. But 170 is not possible - not enough hp considering the drag of the car. In stock form, I estimate a 155 top speed. BTW, an indicated 147mph is likely to be slower in real speed.

That is a very fast speed.
I drive 100+ frequently and it's really not a big deal. The car certainly handles it well.
147 though is friggin fast. On a freeway with other cars around, it's friggin... well you said no flames so...
Anyway, I don't think the car is suppose to cut out on you. Check with the dealer and let us know what you found out.
This is interesting.

I had a Saturn that did that once. Thing is limited at 110... piece of junk. Well I was following a Maxima and an Altima through the middle of Houston at about 110 mph... I had just turned off my AC as the two cars in front of me were pulling away... and then all of a sudden my power just cut out on me. I let up on the accelerator... (it took it about 2 seconds to give me back power)and then jabbed it back down.. but by that time the two cars were already gone. So I have experienced that type of issue when hitting a limiter... even though it wasn't in a TL-S. Just so u know that it can happen.

170 mph - impossible in this car without perhaps 500 hp. Drag effects follow a square law - for every 20 mph beyond a certain point, it takes twice the power.
147 is about the top speed allowed for a VR tire.
The fastest I have driven on the street is an actual 154 in a modified 1985 Corvette I had. At 145, the low pressure outside the car pulled the frameless windows away from the weatherstrip, creating a roar that scared the bejeezus out of me!
I had two radar detectors, one facing front, the other back.
After about 2 minutes, I backed off and set the cruise for 100 and felt like I was loafing along.

i assume thats why they limit at 147, cuz then the tires become a liability. but i have z rated tires right now, and they feel absolutely stable at top speed... and in terms of 170... well i dunno... but i know i definitely couldve gone faster than what i was doing... the car was picking up speed pretty fast considering it was going over 120, where most other cars need miles for every extra 1mph.

I'll back that up .. his car did feel like it had more oomph to go .. dont forget he has Z rated tires, springs (which lower the car and theoretically should reduce wind drag), and headers which, at the top end, add some HP .. would be interested to find out its physical drag limit.. plus all sorts of thigns like weather and such play a role once you're going that fast
