Anyone else have the paint thinning problem..

This is a popular color for the 99/00 and noticed a few on the road with the same issue. Love the car however the roof/trunk look bad.

MY ABP TLS has done the same thing-clear coat failure where the sun has hit it the most over the years. Nothing you can do but have it sanded down and repainted-which is not really worth it on cars this old.

by proper care, I mean, washing it and providing a layer of protection on it!

a carnauba wax only last for a short amount of time.
a sealant will last a little longer

My point was the color itself and type of car play a huge role in whether the paint will thin out over time. Own a 2001 silver C-class & 2001 silver volvo. Have washed each car the same way for the last ten years...The paint on the other two is perfect. Do I have a point yet?

how many vehicles are on the road today?
your sample size? 3?

other brands and makes and colors have clear coat failure as well.

If the clearcote failure is only superficial, sometimes a light sanding and reapplying the top clearcote will rejuvenate the finish.
Check with your local body shop, as it may not require a total repaint.....just the affected flat areas.

From: where the weather suits my clothes
My SSM TL is 14+ years old and has no signs of CCF and it's been relegated to the driveway for at least 4 years.

It's got probably 100+ coats of Zaino on it.

Have you ever waxed it? Darker colors will absorb more uv and heat from the sun damaging the finish. My 2000 laguna green has around 600k miles on it and the paint on the roof looks like new (hood and bumper have been repainted over the years with my modding)

If its just the clear coat then it can be wet sanded and re-cleared, allot cheaper then a full paint job.

Trouble is on the darker colors-just trying to lightly wet sand, buff, & reclear...if its been very long, the darker paints fade without the clear coat on it. You would have to be living right to get lucky enough to get by with just clear coat repair (sadly)

My HMM TL has been pretty good until the left passengers door (under the window) started to thin. I think the acidity in the rain over time has to do with it too, but from what I've seen darker colours get the brunt of it. Either way its always worth it to repaint the car if you like it.

Yeah, a good paint shop could easily repaint the affected top flat surfaces to appear better and blend in with the sides.
Definitely worth the money if the car is otherwise good and ya still like it.
