If you get caught, it will cost you a lot more than that.

Most you can do is ask the owner to say he is selling it for like 15Gs? So you pay less taxes. I wouldnt try avoiding taxes, you can get in big trouble mister!!

I don't know about your state, but in CT you pay tax on the book value, not the purchase price if the car is less than 10 (I think it's 10) years old.

What da heck! You have to pay tax for a private sell? Cuz we don't have to pay tax for a private sell in Canada.

Well, but we paid 15% PST+GST on new cars.

In MA, you pay the tax when you register the car and get plates. They don't care if you paid less thean book value here, they look it up and charge you the 5% of the value.

Thumbs up

Don't put it as a gift or you'll have to prove it is a gift.
All you can try to do is put like a $1000 as the selling price and try getting away with that, the worst that would happen is they will price the car at book value... you not going to go to jail for it... and the other thing is you can still argue that you bought it for a grand...
When I registered a '92 Town Car I put down $10 and it went through...

I suppose you're the kind of guy that pulls the old "drive without the power going to the odometer so you don't log any miles" trick...

In Louisiana, a gift must be from a relative or they won't consider it. Also, the price has to be close to the NADA book. If not, they will reject your sales price and use their value.

Dude, pay the tax like the rest of us honest people do. You may not have faith in the government to do the best job with our tax dollars, but it's still a pretty good country.

If you dodge the appropriate taxes, you do not deserve the protection of the fire department, police, etcetera. Also, please don't drive on the public roads that the rest of us pay for. If you can't afford the tax, maybe you could just rob your parents for the money instead, or one of us on the board - it's the same thing...

I sure do not have faith. We pay a hell of alot of taxes and they definatly do not go were they should go. just drop the sale price so you save yourself some cash.

LOL... this is funny and I hope you were jocking... I already pay over $50K in taxes a year actually closer to $60K...
Public roads they who pays for??? wake up... I think I pay enough to be able to skip on what I can...

As far as the odometer goes... no I won't drive the car without it but I will roll it back before I return it after a lease or sell it!!!
Call me crazy but I rather put money in my own pocket than in someone else...

Wake up and smell the coffee... we already paying enough taxes...
