Angry Another TL Transmission Death

:yack: After only 17,000 miles on my 2002 TL the transmission tanked this morning. It started out with a delay when shifting into reverse. That was followed by a clank when putting it into forward and a high pitched whine during acceleration. It seemed to get worse while driving home so I took it to the dealer as the trnsmission light flashed and check engine light/tcs light came on.
They will look at in the AM. The funny thing is I asked the sales rep that took my keys if this is a common TL problem. He said he had heard of some issues but they were infrequent and quite random.
So I get home and check the forum - and it turns out it IS a BIG issue and quite common.
Thank God I leased.

Sorry to hear about ur tranny.
yes, the issue seems to be big and common over forums. But thats only because people are acutally talk about it. When i first came to this forum, i was so paranoid about the tranny that i was afraid of the tranny in CL-S on GT3(a ps2 game) .
The percent on our tranny failer should be somewhere around 8-10% now(TL and CL only).

good luck with the car in the future.

That sucks, but did you not get the letter from Honda/Acura about that? I did, and made like 3 photocopies of it...

But does it matter how u drive tho???
cuz in my prespective if you use the sequential often there's more wear and tear on ti and the problem will come easier..

My fealing on SS is that if they designed it into the system without putting any useage restrictions on it, then you should be able all day long. I just had my tranny replaced and plan on using SS just as much as I did before!

Status: I was told it would be 1 week to 1 month before I get my car back. In the meantime I will pay $380 a month lease payment. They did give me $45 a day for rental. And I rarely used the SS.

You REALLY should report the failure to NHTSA and even more so if you were placed at risk when the tranny failed. I previously posted the number to call. Here is the link to that info: NHTSA number. The more complaints in their file, the more seriously they will consider the matter and force a recall.

Sales rep or anyone who works for a car dealer would lie about it of course. They feel the need to "cover up" so it does not damage their sales. If they walk around preaching that Honda V6s have bad trannys, then the sales is bound to drop low.

I am telling you guys, this tranny issue is going to kill Hondas reputation, for reliable vehicles. And the 10% failure figure is low, I bet you its much higher than that. BTW, I am a member of the disgruntled tranny club.

100% agree. Mt '01 TL was sent to the tranny gods twice, and finally left us. Now I have three pedals!!!

Time to say goodbye guys. Although I didn't particpate a great deal, it was a good time just reading about others' "adventures".

The '02 TL-p was the wife's car until the tranny went at 19K... copland's post scared the **** out of me so I gave her my '02 Sequoia. With 31.5k on the TL, and driving 35k a year, the 100k tranny warranty was good for only 2 more years (for me). Definitely no peace of mind while living and driving the TL.

So I got me a G35 on Thursday night...sucked it in and swallowed a $4500 loss. Never drove the TL-S so I can't compare, but the G35 is faaasssttt! Way faster than the TL-p.

Time to say goodbye...but there's a good website for G35 drivers.

Take it easy everyone...and good luck to the faithful!
