Almost Got Carjacked in my TL.
So I was coming home from drinks with friends, at around 2am. Me my gf and a buddy who was too drunk to drive so we brought him home with us. I'm a little tipsy and when I pull up to my drive way, I get out leave the engine running, help my buddy and GF up to our house. This didn't take no more then 50secs. when I get into my car, this guy wearing a ski mask comes up to my passenger side door and taps on the glass with a small hand gun. He tells me to unlock the doors, I have 20% tint on all my windows, its dark outside, so I really doubt he could really see what I was doing inside. Weird thing is my doors were unlocked, he just assumed they were locked. So I quickly LOCKED my doors, put the car on Reverse and peeled out, started honking the horn like crazy. The guy started running away, I took off and called my GF to lock the doors and not come out. Didn't come back till cops showed up to my house, in like 1min. Sorry for so long, just venting.
ALWAYS BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS, i was tipsy and didn't even bother to look around, and left my car running. 2 mistakes.

there is another thread where guy and his wife got out of the car with keys on center console and the doors auto-locked, with 2 very young kids strapped their car seats in the back,,,windows up of course!
Took a hammer to break the window and rescue panicked kids
Had the door not locked, someone could just as easily have come up and seen the keys in the car and driven away- with the kids inside
Every day I read about this same thing- with guy and a gun at stoplight, in driveway, shopping centers (they get groceries in the deal with that one!)
and mine is not a major sized city- the economy is way down and unemployment is way up. The criminal element has rising expenses and grabbing a car to do another robbery then dump the car is common.
I agree with poster who locks doors upon entering car, thats good street sense, and the take off and honk is what I taught my wife to do if ever in doubt-
someone gets out of their car at a light??- you DRIVE the heck out of there right now!!!!!!, if you blow a red light camera- good- they will get the bad guy on tape for you!
If you are outside the car, YELLING ~FIIIIIIIIIIRE~ helps too
If you yell for help- people think- there may be danger, I better stay inside,
and the bad guy shoots or knifes you for being such a pain in the ass
People hear FIRE FIRE FIRE and think- hhhmm fire spreads - my stuff could be in danger,
I better go outside and see whats going on! Call 911 quickly !!!!
If you call for fire, they send cop to check it out-
and men with axes are a great deterrent to crime~

Seriously though, Davinci27 that was good thinking on your part when it comes to how you handled the situation. Lesson learned I take it.

Sometimes I think that we fix our cars so nice and we get lots of attention, and thats good and all. But it's also a double edge sword, we also attract negative attention from people up to no good. Sucks, but thats the world we live in. Be Safe Out There.

wow.. these recent threads just amaze me. Leaving the car running, doors unlocked and getting out, wow. This is just asking to get your car stolen. To the OP, I do not mean to insult you. But some people act stupid and then blame others. For example my next door neighbor at my old place used to leave his windows down, keys in plain sight on the center console and doors unlocked in his driveway, which was on an open road (not a subdivision). Then one day his car gets stole and he gets pissed off and blames the police for not patrolling enough. The he gets a new car and does the same thing. Just to add one last thing, I live in an area with very little crime and where alot of people are laid back. but I still lock my car doors when in a closed garage, keep the windows up and keep the keys in a good location inside the house...

Well now thinking about it, yes I know it was stupid of me to leave the car running. But, i think it could've been worst. Had the guy come up to my window, car is off, and demands that I unlock the door. I think he would've shot me if I had gone for the keys, started the car, put it in gear. If he wanted the car, he would've just gotten in the car while I was walking my friend up. I think he just wanted to rob me.
I'm also paranoid with my car, I lock it when inside the garage, put alarm on. Hide the keys when I leave them behind in house. I think I'm the only person that I know that still uses a CLUB. Not on my TL, but on my Legend that I leave parked outside.
