from Hard Drive based to DVD, not CD

it's not insane at all, you can't really compare what your computer costs to the NAV unit, apples and oranges.

To the 99 owners that got screwed because they spent 2K on a nav unit only to have it replaced the next year with a DVD unit that is SOOO much better than the HD one, it's COMPLETELY worth the money and then some. I would have DEFINITELY upgraded if I had the HD based one. If you plan on keeping the car for years, the upgrade is worth every cent... plus it's a direct plug in and there is no modifications needed to switch to DVD.

That unit from Acura is about $1800, plus they charge like $400 for the DVD that comes with it. (yes, you can get the upgrade for $160~ but the "startup disc" they sell is 400)

Uhm...how is it comparing apples and oranges? Saying the computer can ONLY do GPS (not true)...it still costs less than what you're going to go buy in that DVD unit off eBay...and a used one at that. How is it completely worth the money for 99 owners who spent 2k? They were, IMHO, not very bright for dropping the extra 2k...but since they did...how is it now better for them to drop more on this thing...when a computer upgrade would cost less? Wouldn't it be more incentive for them to get a computer...considering it costs less?

It's a direct plug in yes, but I can build a computer that will be a direct plug in as well...does nothing more than GPS, costs a heck of a lot less. You can do that with an SBC computer that's the size of a 5x7 index card...and 1" high. And it still can play mp3's, control a dvdrom, etc etc etc. Whereas the dvd kit doesn't do anything but GPS.

So I guess I'm asking WHY would you ever pick to upgrade with their dvd when you can cheaper with a computer, and get more functions? You can tap directly into the screen already installed (plug in install) and do all the same things...maybe you need to clarify as to how upgrading with their stuff would be better...

to keep everything OEM would be worth it to me. I wouldn't want a computer in my car. I wouldn't want any warranty issues and I would want to have Acura be able to fix any problems that may come up.

You like to play with things like that. I like OEM looks and OEM equipment. I've played a lot with stereos and things like that in past cars and had lots of problems. I've grown out of that phase and think the factory navigation is the best solution for GPS in my car.

I really don't feel like expanding any further into my explanation even though after reading it, it seems it wasnt very good.

You seem to be 1 sided in the way you look at "upgrading" and the costs attached. You like to play with your car and get more toys and you don't seem to understand that not everyone is like you.

I'm not flaming or anything, just telling you how I see your statements.

First of all, thanks to shawhite on his post I have seen one completed packet on Ebay and one of our fellow TL beated me too i think it's 96TL or someone own a first gen TL.

For $700, I think it is worth it to upgrade. I was so pissed after i bought the car and the next year, they went with DVD. Now, after 2 years, everytime i change to a different regions, they charged money. So I think in the long run, it definitely worth it.

Acura3200: I was going to get yours, but Blackshadows beated me to it

I was also pissed too when they came out with the DVD nav the following year. But thank god Jason hooked me up with the OEM DVD nav. To me it was worth every penny since the whole US is on one disc, instead of 6+.:p

Kenny, you can steal Joey's disc. I'll keep him occupied while you take the DVD disc out.

Eh, to each his own you're as biased as me...though toward OEM. I guess I'm just a scrooge on stuff...and if I had a choice to buy it or build it, I'd build it...but oh well...I'll sit back and relax as I don't have to put any DVD disks in ever...

If you didn't get nav, can you get the OEM through dealer? I would think I sell extra nav monitors just in case someone cracks the screen or something. Thing is I'm trying to do aftermarket nav, but it's costly....

this topic has been metioned a couple times... if you think that the aftermarket navi is costly... you probably dont even want to know the price i was qouted by the dealer.... $3600 for equipment and this does not include the dash piece you will need to switch or the ac control panel that will fit right about the radio in that little cd holder thing... plus there is always some un thought of mods that will be needed... (wiring harness, cables,etc)... so if you really want a stock navi i would suggest to simply trade your car in for a tl with navi...probably be about the same price plus a lot less headaches... i figured it out one day i would cost me around $4500 in parts to switch over to the stock navi if it would even work..... or i could trade in my 2002 tl for a 2002 tl-s with navi for about the same price..... i think the guy said he would give me between $26500 and $27000 for a trade and give me the tls with navie for like $32000 out the door...take into consideration i would be upgrading from a tl to a tls....
