Air Filter

I was at Auto Zone and I saw a cylindrlical air filter that will attatch to any 3" pipe. Can I remove the entire air box and attatch this directly to the engine?

I saw those too at some auto store. I was almost thinking of making my own intake out of PVC pipe... Has anyone done this?? Is it even worth trying???

It was one of these type of filters.

By directly attatching this to the engine could I eliminate the need for a intake pipe?

Sure why not....I have no idea how it would sound. remember there are two hoses to the intake, you will either have to get to little filter for each or attached to the main filter by making holes somewhere in pipe.

Or just attach the new filter to the end of stock tubing, but for that I would just buy a stock replacement highflow filter and remove the resornator

What's the real reason for the resonator being there? Is it just for quieter sound? I'm sure Acura engineers put it there for a reason...maybe some we can't even think of.

The resonator is there to keep the car as quiet as possible...after all, we do own luxury cars

SO what happens when you put a CAI in? does the resonator just sit there?

Yes you have to remove the resornator when you installed a CAI.

Look at the picture, you have to remove the bumper to remove the resornator......which there is a thread with good instructions.

You have to take off the front bumper... (well, you don't have to but it's easier that way). To access the resonator. There are two bolts holding it in place. Unbolt them. And simply take it off.

(When you take out the resonator, you do not need to touch the airbox. Simply access the resonator from below.)

The resonator is there to keep the air intake sound to the minimum. After you take it out, even with the stock air filter, you will hear the sound of the air getting sucked in thru the filter.

Hey what a coincidence. I just came up from custom making an intake for my friend's TL-S. I made one for my car out of a spare 3" pipe left over from my Type R. I had to made a cut here and a drill there but when done, man. My car runs well and when I step on it, it roars. It's quiet except for a little hiss at low speeds but then VTEC comes up it roars and you can feel the difference. It cost me 50 bucks total with piping and filter. I don't know what the fuzz is with the CAIs but I think my is working just as well.
