Aftermarket Headunit Installation

Does the '00 TL require a special wiring harness when installing an aftermarket headunit? I ask because it is equipped with an anti-theft system. Although it was a very different vehicle, my '04 Impala had anti-theft, and I had to buy a $110 wiring harness to bypass it (because the security system ties into the factory stereo). I tried to install with a regular harness in the Impala, and while it had power, nothing on it would work, and my dome lights and such wouldn't work either. $110 harness, all worked well.

Does the TL require anything like that? Or can I get a standard wiring harness that's made for the car? I plan to purchase and install a headunit in the near future.

ck the special section Audio for all the info you could want on wiring and others choices for systems that fit well and work right with our baby

if you have the optional NAV-electronic screen ac controls- that changes your options

No, no special harness, the anti theft is part of the HU. Once unpowered it requires a code to work. The only thing special that is needed is a little custom wiring above what the plug and play harness has to get the rear sub to work.

Cool. Yeah, I saw a thread on here for how to wire the factory rear sub. I plan to keep it since I don't plan to install any aftermarket amp/subs.

As Fatty says.. Anti theft is just an LED in the Stereo supposedly made to deterrent Thiefs from stealing the POS OEM HU...

Once unplugged it doesn't do anything to the car, nor the car knows the stereo is out. The stereo on the other hand will need a passcode to be useable but its irrelevant since it also requires the OEM EQ to sound decent which the thief didn't take, As a Standalone HU the OEM is utter crap.

Haha, right on. Well, once I get the money up for an aftermarket HU I'll take care of it. Thanks for the input!

Actually when I unplugged the factory radio with the key out the alarm went off.
But no it does not need any special harness for the anti-theft system.

^ Why you do electrical stuff with the battery plugged?

I understand that very well but after 14years working with all kinds of electronics I have full confidence, plus theres no exposed wiring with the factory harness so its safe.
I pulled the player to fix the CD drive but did not expect the alarm to go off since it was when I first got my TL so I had no idea.

^ You might still pop a fuse or 2 when on power (Been there, done that).
