after start engine stuck at 5000 rpm, cant shift out of park
2000 tl with 117,000 miles
After flooring the accelerator to go through a yellow light, i was unable to slow down. I tried braking but the rpms stayed high, finally i threw the car in neutral and turned it off after i safely exited the road.
When i go to restart the car, it revs up to 5,000 rpm and i cant shift out of park.
When i turn the ignition on both the d5 and p lights come on. The carhad to be towed home and i got hit with an $85 bill.
The battery was disconnected (to reset the computer?)
and WD40 was sprayed on the wire cable connected to the accelerator and it seemed to fix the problem.
The D5 and P lights still come on with the key in the ignition, when i start the the car d5 goes off and the red P light is on.
any concern with the D5 light coming on (i never paid attention before and just noticed it now)?
how can i thorougly clean the accelerator wire cable?
thanks in advance

Id be more concerned about the throttle being stuck the way it was. How does the tranny shift? Normally? So the D5 light still comes on after the battery had been undone to reset the comp? Does it blink?

The TL your first automatic-transmission Honda product?
When you turn the ignition, the gear position indicator in the gauges will light up the current gear (P) and the recommended gear (D5). It's designed to do this. D5 will immediately go off after a few seconds or after you start the car.
All my automatic Hondas have done this, even back in the days of my 93 Accord. I'd turn the key to accessory and (P) and (D4) would light up and then D4 would go out.

exactly how it happened to me. i floored the car to pass up another and then couldn't slow down. i was able to brake and shift into neutral and finally shut off the car. open your hood, get some throttle body cleaner and clean the throttle cable. spray some more cleaner and move it around (engine off) and make sure it isn't sticking. this solved my problem.
good luck!
