Unhappy After 215K my Tranny Died

Well it been a long time coming, but it finally happen after 215K my tranny when died. I had it towed to a Friend shop an now shopping around for new/used Tranny.

MY question is since it's 99 TL with only 4speed, Can I buy 00-03 Tranny that has 5speed and will it work

I have some money save up under 3K, but not enough to do 6 speed swap. I wanted to do an 6Speed swap but need my car too drive everyday to work an pickup kids form school. I can have my car down for about 1-2month if i can find good website use to get use parts or go gunk yard an just get what I need. Any Atlanta TL-er know any good gunk yard around us?

Well dont feel bad even cars without tranny issues dont even make it that long so you should be glad you got that much out of it.

Wow! 215,000 miles. That was a pretty good run. The original transmission in my 1999 TL failed at 173,000 miles.

On the 5-speed swap idea, I recall reading that such a swap would be a really big job since it's more than just the transmission. You'd have to change a pile of associated hardware bits and pieces.

What would be your motivation for installing the 5-speed transmission?

Bob

i'd say stick with the 4-speed, seems to me that they're more reliable. or do a 6-speed swap.

well your car had a really good run! i'm impressed. maybe you should sell some of your mods?

Can't really complain about 215k on the tranny. I'd just get a re-built or used 4spd to keep costs down. I suggest a re-build from a quality shop so you can get a warranty. A used one is a 50/50 chance.

Did you try calling a dealer and asking them if that tranny works? Granted, they wont give you a straight answer but one that will keep their asses safe, but maybe its perfectly safe. If you do that though, you probably dont want a used one. Unless it was built after 05.

the 5 speed will bolt right up BUT it wont work right. the ecu and wiring arent for the 5 speed and wont work right. Stick with a 4. you could have yours rebuilt for under 3k.

My first one made it to 234,000. Just curious, did you change the trans fluid and have it flushed or ignore it for the most part? Seems like if you leave them alone, they last a lot longer. I never did anything to mine. I had mine rebuilt last year for 2200. I am now at 265,000 - no problems yet.

I just ignore the flushed transmission part. Feel it would last longer if i just left it alone.

I'm going to stick with 4speed tranny right now it just hard to find the 99 tranny. I call around Today an everyone trying sell me the 00-03 tranny. Also i called Acura Dealer they wanted 3K installed, but never told me what warranty on new/used tranny.

Thank Guy, on all your Info an HELP
I'm also looking into 6speed Right now.

Last Question to Kris or any Member, If i buy TYPE S engine does it matter what year 00-03 TL/CL is from or do i have to get 03 CL Type-S Engine with 6 MT Tranny? I know I have to get 6speed MT ready, just need check which year Type-S Engine will work on 6speed conversion.

Any type-s motor will work but you will have to change some parts on the auto motor to work with the manual motor. It would be probably cheaper to find a manual motor. Ive seen them for around 800-1k with under 40k when searching for my swap

go 4spd rebuild to keep costs down and have a fairly reliable tranny. I had mine rebuilt at 143k original miles and it could have gone a little longer, but was pretty much toast when I had it rebuilt. I think 143k isn't that bad really, if I can get another 143k out of the rebuild I'd be a very happy camper. My rebuild was $3k and included everything new except the tranny housing and valvebody which were completely cleaned and in good condition per the rebuilder. All new solenoids were installed including a new torque converter and the regular stuff of course.
