Post AEM Air intake

Installed my intake today....I was worried it might be too loud...the TL is a classy car and I didn't want to mess that up.. but I shouldn't have worried!

Awesome sound and a breeze to install. Ordered it from Snook and had it in two days. Nice.

the intake makes sound, too? I thought the exaust is the only thing that makes sound! ummmm, gotta reconsider that if it makes sound. I prefer a quite ride since the TL is luxury>performance.

Yeah the AEM makes sound, but it sounds quiet good too. For AEM CAI, you can always adjust the angel to make a big loud whistle sounds just like the Type R w/CAI.

Hey Ramsen, do you have a 2000 TL?

That's how it usually is when you order from SNooK!

Question

How about performance? Is there a noticeable improvement?

BTW... Anyone in the Toronto area get this done?

In response to the questions...I have a 2000 TL; I got the AEM Short Ram (it looks great under the hood!); it really only sounds louder above 3500 RPM or so (and I like the sound!); and the car feels a bit faster, although that might just be the psychological effect of the improved sound.

I've recently installed an RS Akimoto Funnel III short intake!
I am not happy with it! I think it makes too much noise and the sound is awful! I don't think it makes a noticeable performance gain. We will see, I'm going to Comptech this Friday for a dyno!
Main reason for the Akimoto: Polished pipe!
I going to hear a TL with AEM CAI soon, if I like that, I'm switching!
BTW, does AEM come with an "OILED" filter?

If you want to hear my Intake, you can stop by on your way back from Comptech. I am in the SF bay area. You could've gotten the Weapon-R intake, polished pipe and cheaper. It also has a better filter.

How much HP can you realistically expect to gain from the short?? Is it worth the additional cost over something like a R-Active Filter?

I have family up in Sacramento area! I'm up there usually every other month! Usually fly, but driving this time.
Thanks AcuraTL, but I don't I'll have time to drive through bay area this weekend. Is the Weapon-R filter paper or foam?
I actually got the Akimoto $2 over cost! Guy mis-quoted me in the beginning.

...anyone notice the very distinct notch in the dyno curve on the AEM intake at about 2800 RPM? Very noticeable, not that it will make a heck of a lot of difference overall...but its there....wonder if its a resonance frequency of the tube? Anyway, certainly appears to do a lot at the upper RPM's for your horsies!

I thought all K&N cone filters were oiled. They sell the oiling kit for around $15. You should wash the filter with water to get all the debris out at least every 3000 miles. After you have washed and dried it, you must re-oil it for "optimum" performance. The kit is a two part if I remember correctly. It comes with a pinkish oil spray that you put on last. Anyone else know what I'm talking about??

You are correct, ALL of the AEM filters are made by K&N and are oiled. It is suggested that you check your filter every oil change and see if it needs a cleaning.

newbie question but is it the CAI that makes the cool high-pitched sound that some fixed up turbo-charged cars make?

Mine makes a faint high pitched whistling sound at low speed sometimes... reminds me a little of the turbo in my Integra.

And to add to the "oiled or not oiled" discussion... the K&N that came with my AEM CAI (ordered from Tim, of course) was in a K&N poly bag that had "FACTORY SEALED" and "PRE-OILED" printed all over it.

Exclamation

You have to play with the CAI to get different sounds out of it.

Put the car in 4th gear at 20 mph, then floor the pedal. You'll get a very full growly tone.

Now put the car in 1st, and push the pedal just enough so that it'll hold 4500-5000 rpm's. It sounds like you're choking the engine! It'll sorta wheeze (its perfectly fine for the car) but you can hear mechanically your engine whirring away, and the intake is a small hiss.

And my favorite is from a stop. Just floor it, the car will take a good second to get going, but in that second, you get the nicest whooshy scoopy sound as the T/B opens and the intake is sucking all the air to fill the intake manifold... its very cool.

DONT GET THE WEAPON-R INTAKE! I just took mine off b/c i hated it. My car actually felt slower with it on. But i must admit it did look great with the polished pipe. I just ordered the Comptech drop in filter from Tim.

I just put in my comptech drop in....you can hear a little wistling sound...engine is the slightest bit louder around 3k rpm. Reving is easier...sounds practically stock.

Hey jz983. I went down to my local performance shop and I had the guy there throw in a short ram intake. I think he said it was the same as a 92-95 civic. Not sure...but its polished chrome and pretty phat.
