Cool Advice needed on clearcoat

I know a guy offering to do a clearcoat protection and leather interior protection for $325. Claims he does the some thing for dealers all the time who then turnaround and charge over $1000. I know nothing about this type of service, but I am interested in protecting my paint and leather.

thanks

Question clearcoat protection

How does one protect the clearcoat? Isn't the clearcoat supposed to protect the paint? So, in essence, this guy is offering to protect the paint's protection?

Most people on this board will suggest you using a product like Zaino Bros, which is a hydrophobic (water-repelling) polish with UV protection.

If this guy tells you more about this 'clearcoat protectant', please inform us how this product is superior to polishes like Zaino or other waxes.

What exactly is this guy gonna do. If it's some sort of "protective coating" I can't imagine it being worthwhile, I would think regular washing and waxing is the best thing you can do. Personally I would'nt bother with it, as for the interior keep it clean and condition it once in a while with a good brand.

The "clear coat" you refer to is not really a clear coat. Clear coat is a part of the paint and must be painted onto the paint surface at a paint shop. It cannot be used on final paint job. All he is using is some kind of strong wax that is able to protect the car.

Here's your lesson for the day:

Clearcoat is paint with no pigment

Nothing more....nothing less.

Thanks - I'll get the specifics

Thanks for the input. All I know right now is that this guy has some special clearcoat that he mixes and sprays onto the car. Claims it's the same thing the dealer tries to get you for when you buy the car. I am talking with the guy directly tomorrow and will get the specifics. Maybe then my questions will make sense. The reason I'm interested is that my buddy know about this stuff and says it's a good deal (he's having it done Saturday). I'm just looking for another source.

SCAM.

If this guy does what he claims he does, he's more likely to damage your finish than to protect it, and everyone and his cousin already knows that all the special "protections" dealer's offer you are worthless gmmicks to squeeze more cash out of you.

Just invest in some Zaino's and spend the rest on a good stereo system :-)

So the dealer stuff is BS?

I guess I shouldn't be surprised. I remember the dealer telling me about a special coating that would be like putting a 'thin layer of glass' over the paint to protect it. I assume this is the same thing my guy purports to do. Is this the scam your familiar with?

thanks again.
