advice needed

Hi all, i need some advice. This happened today, everytime i start the car the "maintenance required" light flashes for about 10 seconds and then it shuts off. this never happened before so i was just curious if this happened to anybody else. if it did what did you do and how do you know what part of the car needs maintenance. maybe a tune-up? thanks.

if you have a manual read it. it will explain better what it is

its a dummy light thats supposed to be reset at every oil change. its preset from the factory for 7500 mile oilchange intervals.

to reset it pres and hold your trip and reset buttons, then with the other hand turn the key to the run position (one before it starts) and keep holding the buttons in till the light stops flashing (about 10 seconds.)

yea it means you need an oil change. or maybe you got it changed and they didnt reset it for you. If that is the case just reset it yourself.

i think, you have to press both the select and reset button down then turn on ignition, hold both button until a long beep goes off - then the light is reset.

some correct me if the info is wrong.

That is what they want you to change the oil at. But I think in the book it says 7,500.

yeah the sale person also suggest every 7500miles he said the engine is sooooo good nowadays you can change it every 7500miles, but i change it every 3k miles and i think if the oil lost its vocoscity then it dont matter how good the engine is..

I have an 01 TL. I change my oil after every 5000 miles, but I use synthetic oil. Less likely to have viscosity breakdown.

back in the old days 3000 miles was what was recomended. now days with todays engines and oils 3000 miles is a waste. if teh car manufacturer recomends something higer why not follow it? you do with scheduled maint on just about every thing else (not talking you in specific)

im running 15k change intervals on Mobil 1 (185,500 miles on engine and not a drop burnt) even on regular oil (when i was running it) was running7500 mile intervals (teting the oil every so often) with no issues

These 3000 mile change people are wasting so many resources! 7500 miles what is recommended! When mine was changed after 7653 miles (yes, I went over, the maintenance required light came on and stayed on) the oil still looked fine!

I guess most are falling victim to the Dealerships and the wisdom they have - they set the oil change intervals for 3000miles

other than spending money no one can say it hurts the car to change at 3k miles, and most of us who do it are self changers and we grew up changing every 3/3000... i would never let a dealership do an oil change, most dealerships use substandard shit and substandard processes...

Conventional wisdom and knowledge would dictate that synthetic oil is good for way more than 3,000 miles. I only run Mobil1 5w20 (recently switched from M1 5w30; Mobil just came out with 5w20 not too long ago) and M1-104 filter.

However, my dad has taught me (read brainwashed ) to change oil at every 3k miles. And that is precisely what I do. Call it whatever, but I'm just used to it that way.

If fsttyms1's TL has lasted to 185,500 miles with him doing it the way the manual specifies, and the car's engine still runs strong (transmission being a whole new ballgame), then why do you guys think if you miss a 3000 mile change, your car's life is drastically shortened? Even if his engine blew up tomorrow, after 185.5k miles, I'd say he more than got his money's worth.
