Acura Sport Shift

My dad claims that using the sport shift mode on my TL is horrible for the tranny. To me, it seems like it's actually beneficial since I can control the engine from revving over 3000 when accelerating, this would seemingly use less gas. I imagine dropping down gears and mashing the gas wouldn't be the best thing to do but...

What's your opinion on the auto stick?

It doesn't do any more damage than auto. You are telling it when to shift instead of the ECU.

It definitely isn't any harder on your motor or transmission when you use the sport shift rather then letting it automatically change gears, in fact as both of you said you are telling it when to shift so if you're in a conservative mood I would think that if you used it and shifted at low rpm you get good mileage similar to the 33mpg thread. I would think of it as a big positive to use the sport shift in city situations.

I loved (past tense ) using it in the city so you can keep your gear and not have the trans going all over the place.

I used SS in the city for a day and noticed a significant difference in mileage.

I use SS and get 16mpg. I like VTEC, a lot. Not using it is too boring.

You can get the trans to shift at 3000 by precise throttle control- amount of throttle being used to accellerate
The computer takes all things into consideration
Watch/avoid the downshifts into 3rd and 2nd using SS,
use the brakes to slow the car, not the trans
and enjoy it.

Back in the old days when I just got my driver's license, I still remember my dad kept telling me don't break the speed limit because it was bad for the car, too.

that's what I was hoping you'd say

the only time i would drop down gears is to accel, i only rarely use that method for engine braking. is it bad to engine brake?

Well if you are using it to save gas engine breaking is going to use gas because your keeping the rpms higher slowing the car down. Only time I would use the engine to break is if i hard breaking wanted to come to a quick stop.

use the brakes to slow the car- they are cheap to replace compared to transmission

Drop down into the correct gear to be on the power at the apex, IS the correct thing to do with SS.
You can use it when desperate for more braking- I have, its not going to kill it when done occassionaly- just not a regular practice.

Look how many 6mt drivers downshift thru the gears- instead of using the brakes to reduce speed, and their clutch is a $2500 job!

Have a read of the owner book- it has lots of info on SS and max up and down shift speeds for each gear, and how the override system works to out-think you
https://techinfo.honda.com/rjanisis/...01_OMANUAL.asp
click year then model- wait for the file to open- move hand icon over the word INDEX- click and the entire owner book is there for the learning!! FREEEEE!!!!

the car knows when its decellerating- even if the revs are up a bit, it has various smog controls shutting off fuel or reducing flow- adding air here and there- who knows what anymore!
its so there is less chance of unburned gasses dumping out the exhaust pipes.

You can coast/brake in D5 to a stoplight and the engine is not getting regular flow of fuel- its in coasting mode
Very Smart Cars

Want some fun???- Gen3 cars think and act for themself in emergency braking-turning situation. Adding brake pressure to one wheel or controlling the throttle, to save you on the freeway in the ice and a sudden 4 lane change was required Now!!~
