Acura 99 TL Upgrade

Hi Acurazine Legends,

I have a few weird questions here: I currently own an Acura 99 TL and I'm really looking forward to boosting it.(since it's my first can and it's really hard of letting her go.) My question is: what should I do as prep. work?
(I'm not looking for crazy 25 psi boost, just a simple 8 a 10 psi is superb for me. Most likely supercharger since turbo and turbo manifold for J32A is pretty much as difficult as finding a needle in a haystack)

1), I know that the B7VA tranny is pretty much a glass crap that can barely handle the J32A power. I've been reading about swapping it for the BAYA trans ( AV 6 trans). Another question that I have with regards to transmission is: Should I rebuild the B7VA tranny with stronger aftermarket parts? or simply swap it for the BAYA transmission? (will BAYA even fit my Acura 99 Tl ?)

2) for 8 a 10 psi boost, should I leave the J32A stock (maybe change the head gasket, piston rings, etc.) or should I swap the J32A for it's bigger brother the J32A2.? I know the J32A2 has a higher compression rate compared to the J32, which mean the amount of boost the stock engine can handle is much lower than the J32A, unless forged Pistons, forged heads, bore etc ( which is a pain in the *** for this car)

3) Yes, I'll be changing the stock exhaust manifold and pipe for an aftermarket one. That's a must

4) I know the stock ECU is... well.. as the same suggests. STOCK. To solve this I'll be buying the AEM2 ECU for this car

So to summarize everything: Is it possible to boost an Acura 99 TL? has anyone done it? if so, what (other) steps should I follow in order to complete this project?

Thank you all for reading my post.

If you're going to swap engines and transmissions, then you might as well up it to the J35a3. I don't know anything about boosting cars, there are some really cool builds based around the J35 floating around the forum. One of my favorites done by UA5_6MT Thread

These are mutually exclusive questions. You can not have one with the other. The AEM ecu will not power an automatic transmission. The stock ECU will never allow for 8psi.

Not that I know anything about these swaps aside from reading the threads, but kinda piggybacking off of Karanx7's comment:
My buddy crustyneon on this forum swapped a manual transmission into his TL. Not a '99, but somewhere in the 2nd gen range. I believe he used the transmission and engine from an Acura CL in his build. He may be able to help with figuring out options for a manual trans to put in here.

I've always had the dream to turbo my J32, albeit it's a 2006 6MT TL.

Just gonna word vomit and probably not answer any of your questions or it might.
In my case; with my J32, I would have a spare motor to build while boosting current engine. when current engine blows up from too much boost; swap in the built engine.
I have hondata, so I have the ability to tune. This will be your biggest hurdle. you would need a reliable way to tune.
My biggest hurdle at the moment is the lack of ability to weld. but it's a very small hurdle to jump over, as I can learn.
Because then I could weld up a turbo manifold along with intercooler piping and a down pipe and any bungs I need.

Yeah, I bet the J can see 8PSI! easy!

if you have any more direct questions, let me know!

Hii all,

Thank you all for the replies.

@Karanx7 , Crap, I didn't notice that part. Thnx for the info. I somehow completely missed the line where AEM status that their ECU works with MANUAL ONLY. Again, thank you very much for the warning.

@Davius: Thank you very much for the provided Thread. That's a sweep looking 02 TL-S MT..

@Arkady Yes, As Karanx7 said, If I want to boost my 2G TL, I'll need to perform an auto to manual swap. (since stock ECU will get really mad with 8PSI boost, and AEM A2 ECU simply has mayor beef with Automatic Trannies). THis will be done later down the road. For now I'll rebuilt the tranny since it's my daily car. Once I'm done with the tranny i'll swap the J32A for J35A3. ( let's hope the glass trannny will handle the extra without calling a quit) and the final step will be auto to manual swap.. ( I'm calling the final step since I'll be swapping to manual and boosting it at the same time.. but I'll need to gather ALL the required parts for that upgrade)

Again, thank you all for the provided information. You guys gave me a crystal clear direction on how I should approad this "Upgrade" Project...

Be sure to post pics as your build progresses! We'd love to see how you make these plans work, and it'd be a great resource for future swaps among the community
