About to buy another head unit

Ok, so I have the 99 TL, and the CD player is a pain in the ass... this has been covered numerous times. So I was at the Acura dealer talkin to them about it, and there were going to give me a new head unit for $755!!! I was like "Go to hell." So they send me over to the "Electonics Master" down the road. He just happend to have an 00 TL HU there, and he plugged it up on his dash and I put in a burned CD that my car just spits out, and it played it perfectly. He was going to charge me $250 for a complete swap and install. First of all, will this solve my problem, and second, is it a reasonable deal? I just cant take this CD thing anymore... I've got a portable CD player hooked up to my tape deck right now - how ghetto.... so opinions please!!! Thx

I was on the same path, trying to hunt down an 00+ HU. But at the end I chose a RF CD changer. It holds 10-disc, plays mp3 too. I can remove it when I sell my car.It offers more features too (12-sec shock resistant). And most importantly it was cheaper than the factory HU. IMO better than hunting down the factory HU at a high cost

I got my HU replaced under warranty and it plays all my CDRs now. I would not recommend buying a crappy Acura Bose HU. If its going to cost you 250+ why don't you get an aftermarket Mp3/CD dash player. Or I heard you can get a certain Disc changer with an adapter and use it with the current HU. but if you like to keep things stock, then go ahead and swap out the HU. 250 isn't that bad if it includes install. Make sure he does a good job installing and doesn't break any of your trim clips like my damn dealer did.

tatewaki - how much did your changer cost?? cause I am definately considering this. I do want one that works with the stock head unit, b/c IMO, i think some of those aftermarket HU look cheap, and I'd just assume keep my TL lookin sharp. And really, the only HU I would put in is one of the pop out screen ones. I may wait for a while, and jsut throw in a changer, but I want to research prices a little bit more.

Umm I wouldn't want a (RF) FM modulator cd changer. You have to adjust FM tuning frequencies right? and you lose sound quality (like listening to a FM station instead of CD quality) If you really want a cd changer get an Alpine s630 with the needed adapter and it will work with the stock HU. So you can change cds like it was a stock Acura CD changer. Just do some research and you can come up with a price.

I'd get the Alpine CD changer that plays Mp3's and hook it up with an adapter and use your existing head unit.

I don't think by changing the HU to a 00's HU will solve the problem of playing copy CDs. I have a 00 TL and it plays copy CDs on a hit and miss basis. I think it is more of the Bose configuration of their systems. But one thing I discovered is burning your copy CDs at 8x speed or slow and Bose will accept it 80% of the time. Hope this helps.

Well he said the guy selling the HU put in a CDR that doesn't play in his 99HU and it played. I have a new HU that Acura put in a couple of months ago and it plays all CDRs. So yeah it is a hit or miss thing. but you have a better chance of it playing CDRs if its newer HU.

yeah, I've gotta run over to the acura dealership tomorrow (that should be fun) and while I'm over there I'm gonna check into it some more. They also sell all kinds of CD changers, and yes, I wouldn't want the one that plays through an FM frequency, I'd want it to work like an Acura changer. I'll let you guys know what I come up with. Thanx for the advice... and BTW - I'm still really stuck on that 00 HU... I mean, it played a burned CD perfectly that mine just spits out. It was great. I'll keep ya'll posted!

why would you have a problem with the HU? The adapter is for a CD changer, I don't see why the Alpines CD changer thats attached to the HU (like the OEM Acura CD changer) wouldn't read CDRs.
