They said the government will do a study in April about the safety in HID light systems. That HID lights cause temporary blindness to drivers that stare at them to long. And for now they only come on higher end cars like BMW Lexus & Acura That's right they said Acura! and showed a TL with lights on!

I just finish watching channel 7 "Blinded by the light" special. They talked about:

- only luxury cars and SUVs have them right now
- majority of people getting blinded are from SUVs since they are much higher off the ground than cars
- some makers have auto-leveling so people won't get blinded
- mentioned 3 luxury cars: ACURA, Lexus, BMW
- mentioned fake HIDs from other cars who wants to make it look more luxurious but are more blinding than real HID
- pretty soon all cars will have HID

The special wasn't that long. But hey, we got a shout out from it on national TV.

Damn, I should become a reporter.

hmmm...I don't stare into any light very long, do any of you guys? Also, I think the HID's are "softer" looking than regular headlights.

Looking at any headlights is not a good idea anyway. Why are they focusing on the HID? The headlights from pick-up trucks are worse than a HID from a passenger car because the they're higher compared with a regular passenger car. What about those 18 wheelers? Are they going to move the headlights to the bumper?

I just saw the rerun of "Blinded by the light." They had a TL, CL, and other cars including a GS400. They had some sound with the TL where you could hear the sweet 'TL humm' I thought I saw a white TL w/ground effects but anyway. They also had an interview with an Acura dealer.

What you say about Texans you Seattle Punks!!! hehe j/k

Some hid lights are bright...but who da hell stare at it? The cops strobe lights are more blinding than that here. They should ban those lights.

Cool

What happens is that people (usually people who know nothing about cars) see the different color lights coming towards them, and stare directly into them. Of course it's going to blind you, looking into a halogen headlight would blind you. If you just drive like normal, they're fine.....

heres what tommy thinks:

1)yes, like many have said, even staring at my night light (if i had one) would blind me
2)what person drives directly infront of our lights??? if people were blinded by our lights, they'd have to drive directly head on, and that would end up in a colision, so i doubt they are "blinded" by it.
3)i forgot the rest...

What ABC news said "some drivers look at the light because its different its blue, so before they realize they stared to long and got temporally blinded". They also said the same thing happened in the back when halogens came out in the 80s. (IMO) anyone staring at HIDs instead of the road should not be on the road at night!
wow I cant believe it 2am hope this makes sense.

Many times on da street I see a car with HID. I would go F that guy.... that's too bright man....... Then I found out that the car was another TL..... This happened to me more than 5 times......

I think they are A LOT MORE BRIGHTER.....
but so? you just focus on the road.....

I can know the car behind me is a TL simply by the HID, and the shape. Not 100% sure and not always rite. But our light are bright for SURE... I know a BMW when I see its light from my rearview mirrow, too.....

well.. yah.. staring at a HID will kinda blind u. (haha.. i tried)
well.. i was staring at my own HID lights.. coz i think they are not as blue as other TLs!! I wonder why... Do u guys also feel this? Like other TL's light is more bright and blue than ur own? Also, does this idea occur to u that HID looks MORE BRIGHT and BLUE far distance and looks not so bright in close?
maybe that's why i think my HID isn't bright enough because i never had a chance to look at it from far away (like see it drive by or something)well.. maybe if i start my car and leave the doors unlocked and walks 100m away and check the light out.. by the time i'm satisfied.. my car will also be gone..... heheheh

Hey, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Galileo nearly go blind by using a telescope to stare at the sun as he was studying the movement of the planets?

He's a smart dude; learn from him. Don't stare into bright objects.

Any headlight blinds you if you look directly at, but HID is worse. You shouldn't look directly at any headlights while driving. Cars like mine are bad because my HIDs aren't OEM. The most blinded I got was from an Acura MDX with HID's. He blinded me from like 3 blocks away. I couldnt see for a few minutes. SUVs are supposed to have the automatic adjusting headlights but since MDX's don't come with OEM HID's, this one
didnt. Cars & SUVs with OEM HID's blind me when they hit bumps all the time.

HIDs are one the reason why i got the car. Any light that you look into could cause you to go blind. It just like, no one would go get a flashlight and stare into it.

It's all Baloney! Stare at any light and you will be temporarily blinded! Just make sure that your lights are aimed lower! My TL's lights are just fine.

I think in they taught me that in Driver's ED. class, that you're not supposed to stare at uncoming traffic at night. You're supposed to look right past them, so the lights of passing cars won't distract you. So if people stare into the lights of oncoming traffic, that there problem. It's survival of the fittest, and the dumb has got to go.

But there are certain cases, where bright lights shouldn't be allowed, like some people with bright ass rear blinkers.
