'99TL going to 3rd TRANNY!!

First off, I知 very conscious about the TL's tranny problems so I moderate my driving and occasionally have impulses for some spirited driving

Apparently my dad, the original owner, had an accident in '02 where a bus ran over the front/passenger side of the car and the Acura service guy said that the tranny was replaced w/ a salvage one...idk wtf...but he said they couldn't cover it under warranty because of that (car was repaired @ this dealer too btw!) They showed me some yellow marking on the bottom of the tranny then kicked me in the ass bye bye

tranny #2 @ 38,500miles!!

The tranny's been acting up since aug 05, slipping 1-2x a week and EVERY TIME = 10/10 = 100% when reverse is engaged and the car's cold, the car will JUMP SHAKE and make a LOUD CLUNK! i usually park backwards to avoid reverse!

So I went to another Acura dealer...much closer to home too! ... and after the fourth time complaining they decided to hear me out. I left the car, went to my classes and by the time I was back, the car was cold. I made a tech and the service guy get in the car, turned it on and told the tech to put it in reverse...surely the car acts up very uglily (lol) and both say "Your need a new transmission"

The car's there now, awaiting the third tranny but I知 surprised the 99TL's also have the 100,000mi ACURA warranty (I知 still covered on non-Acura extended neways) and these guys took the car with open arms even with all the mods I have...though I knew this and had to suck up and be very nice

I just hit 91k a few days ago so I知 not really mad about the tranny failing after ~ 50kmiles because I壇 rather replace it for free now than for $4500 in a few thousand miles.

*you didn稚 have to read it all but I thank you if you did...the point is that in the rarer'er (lol2) case of the 4speed AT tranny failing, Acura痴 rebuilt/remanufactured/re-cagada transmissions are a cheap way of meeting their warranty terms and get you out of the way until your warranty is over and you have to pay them back for the favor! I would like to see a poll of people in their third (or second) to see how they've lasted

ya that sucks man...it seems like if your original tranny goes, just be ready for the next one to go also regardless if you have a 4 or 5 speed. I wonder what they really "fix" when you get a new transmission...BTW Im now at 101k miles on my original tranny and it never misses a shift! lucky me I guess

Most of the older replacement trannies didnt have a true fix (wether the new ones do is yet to be seen also) thats why most have 2nd and 3rd failures. Plus who knows whos rebuilding them for acura?

^^ that's the word on the street.

the wierd thing about this transmission is not the usual problem where the forward gears give out...reverse?!?!?...i doubt many people have had this problem and i would like to know what it was.

One of our guys on Bobistheoilguy has a 02 Accord V6 with the same 4-spd AT. He has 103,000 miles now of mostly freeway driving and is still on his original transmission.

He does a 3qt drain/refill with Honda ATF Z-1 at every oil change (6-7K), and even then, the fluid looks disgusting.

I did notice that this fluid is pretty dark to begin with. I filled up a jug with 3 quarts of new fluid and compared it to 3 quarts of old fluid, and the new wasnt much lighter. The main thing you need to check when you change your transmission fluid is to smell it - if it has a burnt smell, then there are problems.

yeah my reverse clunked realllly hard too the other day and this was after driving for a while, turning it off, and then starting it again and going into reverse, which means it was definitely warmed up, car didnt even want to travel in reverse it until after switching back and forth from P to R and then it went....anyways glad to hear you're getting a new tranny before the 100k mark bro...i'm sure it's taking a load of your shoulders

see, again i hear about the front motor mount prob...you should hurry to a dealer 'cause you might get lucky and get that tranny replaced....or motor mount fixed whichever solves your prob

BUT, how can it be the front motor mount...'cause the clunk comes before the mount can even dampen or idk just trying to use some common sense

No the warranty is only for the 7 year 100k. If its done shortly before the 100k then your going to be on the 12k mile warranty on it once you pass 100k ( so if you have it replaced at 99,000 miles the tranny is warrantied till 111,000)

i guess we wont be seeing second gen TL's lasting til the next decade.

i love seeing the legends and vigors passing by all the time.. makes me feel secure that acura makes reliable and long lasting cars.

then i come online and see all these trannyy issues with our gen TL's. isnt it sad knowing that you wont be seeing TL's at ALL within the upcoming few years?? unless there's a really cheap and easy way to get a brand new bulletproof tranny into our cars..

you will see TLs for sure, the % of people with transmission problems are probably VERY low and the vas majority are probably A-zine forumners who like to drive like we have 9lives...and btw apparently it wasn't my tranny giving me problems:

**Got a call from Acura This morning and they said 2 motor mounts and a transmission mount were cracked and needed replacement lol...so apparently my transmission could have been fine prooving that motor mounts have a word in this. but @ 90k miles?!?! some sucky motor mounts!

they are still doing the transmission (lol) and i'm having the motor mounts done there becuase they are only charging $38x.xx (w/ tax) for all the motor mounts and the transmission one too. Fair deal imo.
