99 TL exhaust material

Does anyone know what material the stock exhaust is made of? My car has developed a small leak in the y pipe back where the mufflers diverge. Is the material aluminized steel? I was thinking it was stainless but I guess not. I just dread taking it in because you almost never get out of an exhaust shop without replacing the whole thing (cat-back) due to the age of all of the components. Any suggestions?

Pretty sure it's nothing fancy. Both my muffler flanges started to rot so I cut them out and welded in regular exhaust tubing. Welded up to the existing exhaust just fine.

An exhaust shop should listen to your wishes if you want them to fix the small leak rather than replace the whole cat back system. The ones around me do not have a problem with welding small leaks or fixing bad flange gaskets. Just talk to the guy doing the welding on your system so he knows what you want.

Thanks. I just inspected the system and while I did hear a small leak before, I couldn't locate it today. Both muffler flanges are quite rusted though so it may be from that area. Pipe itself doesn't look bad and the mufflers themselves look good. Might just need flanges cut off and pipe welded in if in fact the leak is in the flange as I suspect.

The exhaust is made of simple steel and it will rust like crazy even on dry weather.

Thanks Skir. Mine is in pretty decent shape except for the flanges. The pipe doesn't look at rusted and I didn't feel any soft spots. Mufflers don't have any visible rust yet. I'll cut the flanges and weld in pipe when the time comes.
