99 TL 6 speed swap help
Hey guys. I just got myself a '99 TL and I'm looking to swap the transmission since it slips really hard.
I've been looking at every swap thread I could find on this forum and I have to say, Phee's thread was probably the most helpful but I want to ensure I'm not spending any money I don't need to.
Can someone help me with which trannys I can fit in my TL & which parts I need? I may be wrong but from what I've found I think I can fit a tranny from the '03 CL-S, '04+ TL, '06-'07 Accord. Do I have any more options? Are there advantages of using one over the other?
Thanks.

Heres the 6 speed thread

All I know about those tranny is that the 03CLS has the LSD and the accord one didn't iirc.

You can use any of the trans you listed above, BUT if you use the 6 speed ecu from the CL you HAVE to use the CL-6 trans. Also i wouldnt use the accord 6 speed. It doesnt have the LSD and having the LSD itself is worth its weight in gold

Would you go with the newer TL trans? The CLS is pretty hard to find and it seems every second car on the road is an 04+ TL. I'd probably find a tranny from that a lot easier than from a CLS.

However like Fatty said, if you use the true manual setup then you must use the CL-S6 tranny.
Probably easier and cheaper to find a lower mileage 04-06 TL tranny. Remember that the 07-08 TL-S6 trannies won't fit our cars at all.

They are the same transmission with a slight difference for the crank sensor setup. If you use the AEM EMS 2, you can use whichever tranny you find.

You have three options for a 6 speed swap:
+True manual
-Uses all parts from the 03 CL-S6
-03 CL-S6 ECU
-03 CL-S6 Tranny
-03 CL-S6 wiring and sensors
+Richie Module
-Keep all your parts and just put in a tranny
-03 CL-S6 tranny OR 04-06 TL tranny
-Keep your auto ECU
-Keep your auto wiring and sensors
+AEM EMS 2
-Keep all your parts and just put in a tranny
-03 CL-S6 tranny OR 04-06 TL tranny
-Keep your auto ECU
-Keep your auto wiring and sensors
Here are some Pros and Cons:
+True Manual
Pros:
-Works just like an 03 CL-S6 would
Cons:
-No tuning options
-Difficult wiring to get everything working (Moonroof, airbags, rear doors, gas gauge)
+Richie Module
Pros:
-Easy to install
-Keep old parts to save cost
-No custom wiring
Cons:
-No tuning options
-People have reported finicky behavior with the module
-Hard to get a module
+AEM EMS 2
Pros:
-Easy install
-Keep old parts to save cost
-No custom wiring
-Tunable
Cons:
-Custom work to get tach and coolant temp working
+True manual
-Uses all parts from the 03 CL-S6
-03 CL-S6 ECU
-03 CL-S6 Tranny
-03 CL-S6 wiring and sensors

So im guessing everyone goes with the CLS since its much cheaper, right? The AEM EMS 2 alone is 1,500$. Ive seen some people on this forum say they got a whole module for the 6 speed swap for under 1000$ sometimes.

Richie Module: $600
True Manual:
-$500 03 CL-S6 ECU
-$300 Engine Wiring Harness
-$300 Dash Wiring Harness
-$150 in sensors and gears
Price is pretty much the same for all of them. I guess Richie module is cheaper, but I don't think it's worth the problems people seem to get with them. Plus you can tune the EMS 2.

For 99 TL you going have to do some extra work with the wiring. The 99 TL harness is more like Accord ( 98-02) it took me 3 set engine to get done right. Really could done with only 2 but forget label all wire in my 1st set. The different is both speed sensor an temperature sensor.
