99 Navigation Help

My Navi quits working when it gets hot. After i remove the harddrive card and let it cool down, it starts working again. I want to remove the Navi unit in the trunk. Is there anyone with specific remove instructions for the unit? any advice would help thanks. I'm just doing this till i can upgrade to the DVD unit. Thanks again.

Your hard drive is failing. At some point it won't even function when it cools off.

For a better interim solution you could replace the stock hard drive with an inexpensive PCMCIA adapter and a 512 MB Compact Flash card.

See this thread for additional "how to" information:

https://acurazine.com/forums/ramblings-12/why-does-always-seem-140469/

I replaced the hard drive in my 1999 TL with a CF card based soulition and it works great. Unlike the hard drive, it is not sensitive to heat or vibration. And it's even faster thann the hard drive.

or just find a DVD based unit and replace yours with that...its simply plug and play, nothing else needed.

my navi did the same thing before--intermittent disruptions when things got really hot then it went fine when things cooled off. the last heatwave, however, did it to the hard drive. now i'm in the midst of fixing this '99 navi issue w/the adapter and flash card method. thanks to an earlier thread post. but i'm currently tracking the adapter i bought from an e-bay merchant at the post office. btw, it's gone up to $11 to incl ca tax & mail insurance. i was going to order the paul mooney fix but when i found out that the local dealer would upload the files at no charge, i decided to give this method a shot.

Bob, with the prices of flash cards going down, i wonder if there's an added benefit in using 1Gb in lieu of 512Mb. thanks

With a sufficiently large CF card, could you just load the entire DVD map? They make 8GB (and possibly bigger) CF cards now.

I think I read somewhere that you have to use a 512 MB CF card and that larger ones will not work. But I've never tried a larger one myself.

I think Paul Mooney mentions on his navhelp.com web site that it's not possible to put all the regions on a larger CF card.

I currently purchased the cf reader to for 99 cents plus 5 bucks shipping. I'm waiting on it so i can fix my system.

i have called two dealers in my area said they were gonna charge me for the service. Is there anything specifically that you told them, so they can d-load the info?

Thanks again for the posts to this thread.

the dealer has the "fix" w/c is identical to what paul mooney is selling online but they're charging $199 for it. i happen to bring the print out from paul mooney's site and showed it to them. i offered to pay for the 'fix' for same price as was available on line and the service advisor said-'...don't know if we'll go that low'. i then mentioned that i coud get the set up but the trouble was i don't have the files. the svc advisor then said she'll d-load it for me for no charge. this dealer has upated my old h-drive w/the '02 files before for no charge.

btw, i found the adapter. i'm on my way to get a flash card. then to the dealer for the files.

That's awesome! Congratulations.

It's a great feeling when it fires up for the first time.

Thumbs up

Sorry, just wanted to bump this thread with a big thankyou to Paul Mooney for his replacement solution for the navigation system for my 1999 TL. My dealer would not download the updates onto the home-made remedy for a defective HDD , so Paul Mooney was the only place I could turn (without emptying my pockets). And he followed through with courteous emails and prompt delivery!!

here is the DVD navigation unit. It is brand new and comes with 4 digit anti-theft code.
It's only 274.99 dollars.

Good Luck!

You might want to bring in your failed hard drive unit just in case they want to see it. They may also ask for your car's VIN number.

So did they do it for ya? My local dealership would not download the data for me. Then again, i've never set foot in that dealership, so i don't have any kind of repoire with the SA like others on this board...
